Marshall Scores Twice to Lead Bobcats
POTSDAM, N.Y. - David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) scored twice to lead the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team to a 4-2 win over Clarkson in Potsdam, N.Y. The Bobcats, winners of their third straight game, improve to 5-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in ECAC Hockey action while Clarkson drops to 2-5-2 overall and 1-4-0 in league action.
"I thought we played well, we definitely battled," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "It wasn't our best game and we almost let it get away in the third period, but overall we played well. I'm happy with a run on the road."
Senior forward Chris Myers (Wallaceburg, Ont.) put the Bobcats out in front at the 12:17 mark fo the first period. Myers came out of a scrum, following a face-off, with the puck on the right flank. Myers was all alone and one-on-one with Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich. Myers' wrist shot snuck over the shoulder of Karpowich to give the Bobcats the early 1-0 lead. The goal was Myers' first goal of the season.
At the 13:31 mark, Jean-Marc Beaudoin (Bonnyville, Alb.) dug the puck out of the corner and passed out to the left of Clarkson's goal to Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.). Wong then found Dan Henningson (Edmonton, Alb.) all by himself in between the face-off circles. Henningson's blast from the point beat Karpowich stick side to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. The goal was Henningson's first of the season while Beaudoin and Wong each pick up their fourth assist of the season.
Marshall gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead less than a minute into the third period. Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) dropped a pass off to Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) behind the Golden Knights' net. Lampe cut around to the left of Karpowich where he found a wide-open Marshall sitting out in front of the crease. Marshall netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season and 56th of his career. Leitch picks up his team- and league-leading 11th assist on the play while Lampe gets his fourth helper of the season.
The assist gives Leitch 80 for this career, making him the 12th Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player all-time, and fifth in the Bobcats' Division I history, to reach the mark.
Quinnipiac last held a 3-0 lead over Clarkson on Feb. 3, 2006 in a game played in Northford, Conn. Myers also scored in the first period of that game as well as the Bobcats rolled to a 6-1 win.
At the 10-minute mark of the second period, Matt Sorteberg (Anoka, Minn.) was called for a 5-minute major and a game misconduct before Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was whistled for holding less than 20 seconds later. Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.), seeing his first minutes since Oct. 30 against UMass Lowell, denied Clarkson on five shots on goal on the Golden Knights' 5-on-3 advantage. Quinnipiac entered the game ranked 6th in NCAA Division I hockey on the penalty kill. Fisher finished with 22 saves in the win.
"I thought Bud played great," Pecknold said. "Bud won here as a freshman and then again as a sophomore. I wanted to give him an opportunity to get back out there."
Clarkson got on the board for the first time in the game at the 8:26 mark of the third period when Adam Bellows connected with Scott Freeman in the Bobcats' zone. Freeman then found Lauri Tuohimaa in the right face-off circle. Touhimaa cut across the Bobcats' goal, spun and fired on Fisher, beating the senior goalie to his left to cut into the Bobcat lead, 3-1. The goal came on a Bobcats' power play and was the first shorthanded goal that Quinnipiac has allowed this season.
Marshall was quick to answer, scoring at the 9:17 mark to give Quinnipiac a 4-1 lead. Hansen broke up a Golden Knights' scoring drive and hooked up with Leitch in the Bobcats' zone. Leitch then turned and found Marshall taking off down the ice towards the Clarkson goal. One-on-one with the goalie, Marshall slipped his sixth goal of the season past Karpowich to push the QU lead to 4-2.
Clarkson scored on the power play with less than nine minutes to play. Matt Beca passed to Shea Guthrie who found Brandon DeFazio in the slot. DeFazio's shot beat Fisher top shelf to cut the Quinnipiac's lead to two goals with less than half of the final period to play. The goal was the first power play goal allowed by the Bobcats in 31 consecutive opportunities through Quinnipiac's last five games.
Quinnipiac closes out their North Country swing on Saturday, Nov. 22 when they face St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. Quinnipiac will also play a mid-week game on Wednesday, Nov. 26 when they take on Princeton in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, N.J.
