Clarkson Suffers Loss at Bowling Green
The start of the four-game road trip in the State in Ohio did not go as planned for the Clarkson University Hockey team as the Golden Knights lost in non-league action at Bowling Green on Friday night, falling to the Falcons 4-1 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Clarkson, at 2-9-4 overall, will try and break out of a 10-game winless skid (0-8-2) when it faces Bowling Green (6-10-3) in the second game of the weekend series on Saturday, beginning at 5:05 p.m.
Bowling Green came out on top in specialty teams play to snap their own winless streak at six games (0-5-1). The Falcons went 2-of-7 on the power play and killed off all five of the Knights' man-advantage chances.
"It is a struggle right now and I think we are all frustrated," stated Clarkson head coach George Roll. "Our confidence is low. I didn't think we had enough guys going tonight. We had some good efforts and guys worked hard, but from top to bottom it obviously wasn't enough. We have to be better. Bowling Green played hard tonight, they worked and deserved the win."
In a fast-paced, hard-fought first period, the teams skated to a 1-1 tie after the opening 20 minutes. The Falcons went on top first with a power-play goal by James Perkin at 13:02. Just 47 seconds later, however, the Knights came back to even the score. Freshman Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) knocked in a shot off the back of the BGSU netminder for his second collegiate goal after senior Mike Willemsen (Stittsville, ONT) put a shot on net from the corner. Sophomore Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) also assisted.
Bowling Green took control on the scoreboard with a pair of goals in the middle frame to hold a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes. Dan Sexton tallied the game-winner at 7:43 while both teams were skating four aside. At 12:58, Kai Kantola connected for a power-play marker to give the home team a two-goal advantage.
The Falcons scored their only 5-on-5 goal of the night at 14:56 of the third with Sexton connecting again for BGSU"s fourth goal.
Freshman Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) made 30 saves as Bowling Green out shot the Knights 34-27.
