Dutchmen Lose In Overtime to Mavericks
OMAHA, NE - A goal by Nebraska-Omaha senior
left winger Dan Charleston 4:54 into overtime lifted his team to a
2-1 victory at against the Union College men's ice hockey team at
the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. The Dutchmen stand at 1-1-0 on the
season, while the Mavericks improve to 2-0-0.
Sophomore center John Simpson
(Boxborough,
MA), who had three goals in two
games, sophomore defenseman Brock Matheson
(Ganaoque,
ON) and sophomore goaltender
Corey Milan (Great
Barrington,
MA) were all selected to the
all-tournament team.
Union did its damage mostly while shorthanded in the opening
period. After killing off a penalty by junior center Jason
Walters (Renfrew, ON) only 39 seconds in, the Dutchmen
were in the midst of playing with a man down when sophomore center
John Simpson (Boxborough, MA) cashed in
shorthanded 6:38 into the contest.
After picking off a pass in his own defensive zone, Simpson raced
to the other end and roofed a shot short side over Maverick goalie
Jerad Kaufmann's catcher. The goal, which was Simpson's
third in two games, was Union's first shorthanded goal since T.J.
Fox had one against Cornell on Feb. 9, 2007.
The Dutchmen produced several chances in the second period and went
on the power play twice, but the Mavericks had an answer each time.
Milan faced XX shots in the second, including two shots (from the
point and on the rebound) that kept UNO off the board with just 53
ticks remaining.
Simpson battled and took advantage of a fatigued Mavericks defense
with time running down getting a semi-breakaway with only two
seconds remaining. Kaufmann used his left pad for the save.
In the third, Union's offensive pressure at times turned into
dump-and-chase as the team tried to protect the lead. However, a
deflected shot from the point at 10:31 in by sophomore defenseman
Alain Goulet tied the game.
Milan responded with key saves shortly after, including a
semi-breakaway at the end of a Dutchmen power play and again on an
odd-man rush with just under two minutes remaining.
In overtime, Charleston secured a turnover and went top shelf on
Milan for the victory. Charleston was named tournament MVP shortly
after Union last won a tournament championship in 1993 when
they skated away with the Concordia Invitational title with wins
against Concordia (5-3) and New Brunswick (6-2).
The contest was the fifth all-time match up between the two
programs. Last season the teams split a weekend series at Messa
Rink. Union won the first contest 3-2 in overtime, but lost the
second 4-2.
