Bobcats Top AIC at Omaha Stampede
OMAHA, Neb. - In the consolation game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., the Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team defeated American International College, 4-1. Quinnipiac improves to 1-1-0 on the young season while AIC drops to 0-2.
Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) and Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) each recorded two assists. Wong was named to the all-tournament team after leading the tournament in points with three goals against Union and two assists against AIC. Freshmen Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and David Arduin (Halfmoon Bay, B.C.) both scored their first career goals while classmate Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.) picked up his first career victory in his first career start in goal.
David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) got on the board first with his first goal of the season just under five minutes into the game. Quinnipiac, on the power play, put constant pressure on AIC's Tom Fenton in goal before Leitch broke up an attempted clear to the right of AIC's goal. Leitch then fed Marshall from the slot and the senior wing buried his 52nd career goal. Marshall's career total makes him the active leading goal scorer while Leitch picks up his third helper in two games.
Heichman and Arduin each scored their first career goals in the first period to push Quinnipiac's lead to 3-0 with seven minutes to play in the first frame. Heichman was assisted on the play by Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) and Wong while Arduin was set up by Sean Coughlin (Winthrop, Mass.) and Chris Myers (Wallaceburg, Ont.).
Zach Hansen's (White Bear Lake, Minn.) first goal of the year gave Quinnipiac a 4-0 lead. The sophomore defenseman's one-timer from Wong, who was fed by Leitch, beat Fenton stick side to the lower right corner.
At the 12:44 mark of the second period, AIC got on the board for the first time when Chris Campanale took a pass from Matt Woodard leaving Campanale 1-on-1 with Quinnipiac freshman goalie Pisellini who was making his first career start. Campanale was able to beat Pisellini glove side after receing the pass by the left face-off circle.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 30 when they travel to Lowell, Mass. to take on the University of Massachusetts Lowell at Paul E. Tsongas Arena in a non-
