Dutchmen Rally for Opening Victory
OMAHA, NE - A power play goal by sophomore right winger Stephane Boileau (Blainville, QB) with 2:38 remaining in overtime completed Union's comeback in a 6-5 victory against ECAC Hockey rival Quinnipiac on Friday during game one of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede hosted by Nebraska-Omaha. The Dutchmen erased a 4-0 first period deficit to earn their first victory of the season.
"I thought it was a pretty lucky goal," Boileau said. "I had three cracks at it. I tried a backhand and missed it. I had a forehand hit the post and then I finally made it. It was a good power play goal. We took the puck to the net and scored."
Boileau had several cracks at it before he finally turned the red light on. He and sophomore center John Simpson (Boxborough, MA) each finished with a career-high two goals. Classmate Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, AB) led the team with a goal and two assists - he set up the final two markers.
"I thought it was a well-played game, but both teams were making mistakes early in the game," said head coach Nate Leaman. "I thought we were a little over emotional and it caused us to be fatigued in the first period. But I was really impressed with the guys. You don't come back from four goals down much in college hockey. The team stuck together and they deserved it."
Simpson gave Union a 5-4 lead with just under seven minutes remaining the third, but Quinnipiac's Jean-Marc Beaudoin sent the game into OT with a tally in front, 16:33 into the period.
Union erased its largest first period deficit in school history with two goals in the second period. Junior center Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) got things rolling only 11 ticks into the second period on a pass from sophomore defenseman Brock Matheson (Ganaoque, ON). Walters streaked down the left side and went five-hole Bobcats' goaltender Bud Fisher.
Controlling most of the action, Union began creating more chances and broke through again at the halfway mark of the second. Simpson capitalized on a Quinnipiac miscue and fired a shot from the slot into the back of the net.
Only 1:18 later at 11:21 in, freshman left winger Brian Yanovitch (Grande Praire, AB) sent a pass from deep in the Quinnipiac end to sophomore center Justin Pallos (Glastonbury, CT) in front of the net. Pallos went across the crease to Boileau, who tallied his seventh career marker.
With the momentum colored garnet and white, Presizniuk, Union's 2007-08 most valuable player and ECACH All-Rookie Team selection dinged a shot off the post, off the goal line and into the far end of the net. The power play goal was setup by junior defenseman Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, AB).
Presizniuk's shot was one of 42 for the Dutchmen, who posted 52 shots against the United States Under-18 Team on Oct. 11 at Messa Rink. Union posted 17 shots in the first period, 10 in the second, 12 in the third and three in overtime.
During the opening frame, Union's best opportunity came during the first power play of two consecutive two-man advantages. Junior right winger Mario Valery-Trubucco (Montreal, QB) hit the pipe with six minutes remaining.
At that point Union was facing a 4-0 deficit thanks to a first period hat trick from Quinnipiac junior center Brandon Wong. He tallied the team's first, third and fourth goals.
Senior right winger Chris Myers registered the Bobcats' second goal by going five-hole while playing four-on-four 6:16 in the first.
Sophomore goalkeeper Corey Milan (Great Barrington, MA) registered 15 saves for his seventh career victory, while Fisher finished with 36.
Union went 2-for-6 with the man advantage and killed 3-of-5 with a man down.
The Dutchmen will play the winner of the American International/Nebraska-Omaha game on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8:05 p.m.
