ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior center Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) recorded his first career hat trick to power the Clarkson University Hockey team to a 6-4 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology Friday night before an overflowing crowd of 2,100 at Frank Ritter Arena in the Golden Knights opening game of the 2008-09 campaign.

“I was very pleased with our effort tonight in a pretty tough building to play in,” stated head coach George Roll. “Chris D’Alvise’s line (Brandon DeFazio, Matt Beca) was good all night. All three guys had an exceptional game. They were our best line tonight, and I am sure that will be the case in a lot of games this season."

RIT (1-2) took a 2-0 first-period lead, but the Knights came out strong in the second, outscoring the Tigers 4-1 in the middle frame to hold a 4-3 advantage through 40 minutes.

D’Alvise, Clarkson’s third-leading scorer last season, started the Knights’ comeback early in the second. After taking a pass along the left boards from sophomore Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT). D’Alvise made a strong move in front and lifted in the Green and Gold’s first goal of the season at 4:42. Senior defenseman Phil Paquet (Quebec City, QUE) also assisted.

D’Alvise connected again at 9:37 when he intercepted the puck in the neutral zone, used an RIT defenseman as a screen and snapped in a quick wrist shot to tie the score 2-2. Just 29 seconds later, the Tigers answered back to regain the advantage at 3-2.

Less than a minute later, the Knights evened the score once again as junior Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) connected off assists from DeFazio and D’Alvise for a power-play marker. Sophomore Lauri Tuohimaa (Helinski, Finland) gave Clarkson its first lead of the game, finishing off assists from DeFazio and sophomore Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) at 16:07 for a 4-3 Clarkson advantage.

Junior Tim Marks (Brownville, NY) gave the Knights a two-goal margin midway through the third with a highlight-reel tally. Skating a man-down for the third time of the game, Clarkson put pressure on the Tigers in their own end and caused a turnover when Freeman picked up a loose puck along the left boards and sent a pass to Marks in front. Marks put several moves on the RIT goaltender and then slipped a shot in behind at 10:57 for his first career shorthanded goal.

The Tigers increased their pressure and made it a one-goal game at 13:17 on Jesse Newman’s second goal of the game.

D’Alvise, however, ended any thoughts of a comeback by the home team with an empty-net goal in the final 17 seconds to clinch Clarkson’s sixth straight win over RIT.

Freshman Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) picked up his first collegiate win in the Knights’ goal with a 35-save effort, including 16 in the third period.

RIT out shot the Knights 39-25. Clarkson was 1-of-1 on the power play and killed off all three Tigers man-advantage opportunities.

Clarkson plays at Niagara on Saturday night.
