Bobcats Triumph Over Rensselaer
TROY, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 5-1, in an ECAC Hockey game played at the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y. The win gives the Bobcats back-to-back wins for the first time since a ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round sweep of Brown on Mar. 7-8, 2008. Quinnipiac improves to 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play while RPI drops to 3-7-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league play.
"I give our team a lot of credit," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "We went three games without a goal and they were all games we could have won. Plus we had two days to turn around after playing Princeton on Tuesday. We could have tucked-tail, but we came out and played hard."
Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) continued his scoring dominance over the Engineers, this time scoring one and assisting on two more goals. Lampe now has five goals in his last three games against RPI. Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) had a goal and an assist and Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) had two assists in the win. Freshman Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Sask.) had two goals, including an empty-netter with less than four minutes to play.
Hansen scored his second goal in as many nights, and third of the season, on a one-timer from the point. The Bobcats had a 5-on-3 advantage but RPI managed to kill the first penalty. Up a skater, Lampe collected the puck after a wide shot by Matt Sorteberg (Anoka, Minn.). Lampe hooked up with Leitch on the right flank, who passed to Hansen out in front of the right face-off circle. After Hansen passed back to Leitch, he received the puck after the defense commit to Leitch. Hansen's blast beat RPI's Mathias Lange stick side to give the Bobcats a power play goal and a 1-0 lead.
Marshall scored at the 18:18 mark when the Bobcats, on the power play after RPI's sixth penalty of the first period, put a rush on Lange in net. Lampe received a pass from Sorteberg and put a shot on goal. Lange stopped Lampe's shot and then denied Marshall on two shots off the rebound. After it rolled out of Lange's pads, Marshall punched it past Lange, five-hole, to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
With both goals coming on the power play in the first period, it gives the Bobcats five power plays goals in the last four periods. On the back check, Quinnipiac has killed 41 of their last 43 penalties over their last six games.
"We've been generating a ton of offense," Pecknold said. "We hadn't been getting any bounces. We got a lot of bounces go our way this weekend."
Quinnipiac took a 3-0 lead 4:15 into the second period. Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) took a shot from the slot was that wide left. Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) collected the puck behind the nut and rolled out to Lange's left. Atkinson then slipped a pass across the crease to Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Sask.), who banged home his one-timer for his second goal of the season.
At the 6:33 mark, Lampe scored his first goal of the season. Marshall won the face-off inside the Engineers' zone, sending the puck to Hansen. Hansen then fed Leitch who gave it to Lampe streaking towards the net. After a fake to his left, Lampe went to his backhand and beat Lange off the crossbar to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead. Leitch's assist was his 10th of the season while Hansen picked up his third helper.
RPI got on the board for the first time in the game at the 5:56 mark of the third period. Alex Angers-Goulet handled the puck in the left face-off circle before he found Mark Zarbo streaking to the goal from above the blue line. Zarbo took the pass in the slot and blasted home his first goal of the year. Quinnipiac added another goal at the 16:31 mark when Zurevinski scored on an empty net.
In goal Quinnipiac freshman phenom Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.) had 23 saves in the win to improve to 4-2-1 on his young career. RPI's Lange finished with 26 saves while allowing four goals.
Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend when they travel to the North Country to take on Clarkson on Friday, Nov. 21 and St. Lawrence on Saturday, Nov. 22. Both games are ECAC Hockey match-ups and are set for 7 p.m. starts.
