Tigers Roar to Fourth Straight Win
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The 11th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team
defeated Union 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink to complete
a weekend sweep. Junior Mark Magnowski's second period goal proved
to be the game winner as the Tigers won their third in a row.
Princeton outshot Union in each period and held a 45-29 shot edge
at the end of the game. With its 53 shots in a win on Friday at
Rensselaer, the Tigers garnered 98 shots on goal for the weekend as
Princeton won its second straight 4-1 game. The Tigers sweep was
its first of the Capital District teams since the 2000 season.
The Tigers snapped what was a scoreless game with 1:39 left in the
first period when sophomore Sam Sabky netted his first collegiate
goal. The tally came with the man advantage and was assisted by
junior Dan Bartlett and Tyler Beachell. The linemates have combined
for goals in each of Princeton's last three games, with each player
scoring once.
The Tigers would add the eventual game winner 8:42 into the second
period when Magnowski put the Tigers ahead 2-0 with his
team-leading third goal of the season. The score was set up by
sophomore Mike Kramer and sophomore Matt Arhontas.
Sophomore defenseman Taylor Fedun made it a 3-0 lead for Princeton
when he scored on the power play at 12:28 of the third period.
Senior captain Brandan Kushniruk sent him a centering pass from the
corner as Fedun snuck down to the crease from his spot on the
blueline. Sophomore Kevin Lohry also assisted on the goal.
Union cut the lead to two goals with 2:34 remaining on Jason
Walters' third of the season but Arhontas punctuated the win when
he scored into the open net with 1:53 left. Arhontas, who was on
the ice killing a Princeton penalty, blocked a point shot and then
went in all alone to slide the puck into the open net for his
second goal in as many nights.
Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 28 saves, including
12 in the third period, to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Kalemba has now allowed a goal or less in each of his six starts
this season. Corey Milan made 41 saves in the loss.
Princeton improved to 5-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the ECAC. The
Tigers were 3-0 this week and have won their last four games.
