Crimson Edge Saints, Complete Weekend Sweep
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Freshman Matt Hoyle posted his first
career shutout and Matt McCollem scored his second goal in as many
nights to lead the Harvard men’s hockey team to a 1-0 win
against No. 19 St. Lawrence, completing a weekend sweep of ranked
opponents.
The Crimson (4-2-0, 4-2-0 ECAC Hockey) posted its first shutout of
the season on the heels of a 5-1 win against No. 16 Clarkson and
remained unbeaten in four home games. Harvard held a 36-29 edge in
shots against the Saints, who lost for the second straight night
after entering the weekend on a five-game unbeaten streak.
The goalies stole the show in a free-flowing but scoreless first
period. Hoyle came up big first, just over seven minutes into the
game. He made a crucial initial stop on Jared Keller and then
stoned Sean Flanagan on the rebound attempt. Hoyle finished the
frame with nine saves.
Petizian’s best saves of the first also came in rapid
succession. After knocking down freshman Alex Killorn’s shot,
he extended his left leg to get a toe on sophomore Pier-Olivier
Michaud’s follow-up chance. Petizian made 13 stops in the
first.
McCollem broke through on the power play as the game neared the
midway point. With a crowd in front of Petizian, senior Steve
Rolecek and Killorn put shots on net, and the sophomore hung by the
right post to bang in the rebound of Killorn’s shot.
Harvard outshot St. Lawrence, 17-10, in the second period but took
two penalties 30 seconds apart late in the frame. Senior Jimmy
Fraser and juniors Alex Biega and Ian Tallett helped Hoyle and the
Crimson kill the ensuing 90-second five-on-three advantage that
spanned the second intermission.
On a power play of its own early in the frame, the Crimson had a
chance to double its lead, as junior Doug Rogers and senior Nick
Coskren had pretty passes to set up Michael Biega. Petizian could
not get his pad on the sophomore’s shot after Coskren’s
feed across the goalmouth, but the puck found the right post to
keep the score at 1-0.
Hoyle and the defense had the rest of the highlights, with the
rookie stopping Matt Generous on a chance all alone in front with
about eight minutes to play. St. Lawrence committed two penalties
in the final four minutes, the second forcing the Saints to put
Petizian back in net after lifting him for an extra attacker. They
took him off again in the final seconds, and Harvard almost took
advantage, but Coskren’s shot went just wide of the left post
at the buzzer.
The Crimson seeks its third win in five days when it returns to
action Tuesday at Brown.
