Engineers Blitzed by Miami

OXFORD, Ohio -- The third-ranked Miami University men’s
hockey team scored three first-period goals on its way to defeating
Rensselaer, 7-1, this afternoon at Steve Cady Arena in the Goggin
Ice Center. With the win, the RedHawks improve to 13-3-3 on the
season, while the Engineers conclude their fall semester with a
3-13-1 record.
Freshman Will Weber (Gaylord, MI) put the hosts up 1-0 on a shot
through a screen at 4:58 of the opening frame. He took a pass from
junior Jarod Palmer (Fridley, MN) at the left point found the back
of the net. Sophomore Pat Cannone (Bayport, NY) added the second
helper.
The RedHawks took a 2-0 lead under two minutes later on a
breakaway goal off the stick of senior Justin Mercier (Erie, PA).
Sophomore Carter Camper (Rocky River, OH) flipped the pass up the
ice to Mercier, who beat RPI freshman netminder Allen York
(Wetaskiwin, AB) high stick-side.
Freshman Alden Hirschfeld (Sylvania, OH) pushed Miami’s lead
to 3-0 with his first career goal at 19:52 of the first. He was
assisted by Bill Loupee (Bloomfield, MI) and Alexandre Lacombe
(Orleans, ON). The Engineers were out-shot 15-9 in the opening
stanza. Neither team recorded a power play goal in the first, with
the RedHawks going 0-3 on the man advantage. RPI was 0-1.
Miami sophomore Tommy Wingels (Wilmette, IL) scored the only goal
of the second period giving the hosts a 4-0 lead at 14:01. Camper
fed the puck up the middle of the ice once again to earn his second
helper of the afternoon. Mercier picked up the second assist.
RPI brought the game to within 4-1, just 1:11 into the third
period. Sophomore Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN) notched the
power-play marker, with assists going to classmate Chase Polacek
(Edina, MN) and senior captain Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin,
PQ).
The RedHawks closed out the final period with three straight goals
from senior captain Brian Kaufman (Shoreview, MN), Wingels and
Camper. Wingels finished with two goals and two assists, while
Camper had a goal and three assists.
Miami freshman goaltender Conner Knapp (York, NY) made 17 saves on
the afternoon, while York had 35 stops. RPI went 1-6 on the
power-play, while Miami ended up 2-6.
Rensselaer is idle until January 2 & 3, when it takes part in
the Wells Fargo Denver Cup in Denver, CO. The Engineers will face
Boston University on Friday, January 2 (6:30pm) and either Denver
or Holy Cross on Saturday, January 3 (TBA).
