Bobcats Roll Over Union Behind Leitch's Hat Trick

Boxscore

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) totaled a career-best five points including his first career hat trick as the Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team knocked off Union College, 6-3, on the Dutchmen's home ice. Quinnipiac improves to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in ECAC Hockey action while Union dips to 4-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.

"I thought we played well against Colgate and Princeton," Head coach Rand Pecknold said. "But tonight our guys bought in. We played well and executed well. It's important that we got a win here tonight, because if we didn't we were in a lot of trouble. Hopefully we'll build off of this tomorrow night."

Leitch broke Quinnipiac's 194-minute scoreless streak, dating back to the third quarter of its 4-1 win over Connecticut on Nov. 1, with his first goal of the season and 42nd of his career. Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) hooked up with Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) in the left slot who unleashed a one-timer on Union's Corey Milan. Milan deflected the shot across the goal mouth where Leitch was waiting to put it home. Leitch would have a hand in Quinnipiac's first five goals, scoring three times while assisting on two more.

Leitch picked up his seventh assist of the season at the 7:03 mark of the first period on the Bobcats' power play when he controlled the puck to the left of Milan. Leitch then moved the puck to Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) above the face-off circle who passed across ice to Matt Sorteberg (Anoka, Minn.). Sorteberg's one-timer beat Milan stick-side to the top right corner of the goal to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.

Union's Matt Cook moved the Dutchmen within a goal of the Bobcats with less than three minutes to play in the second period. The Bobcats tried to move the puck around Union's defense but Cook broke up the play and took off down the ice. Cook's shot beat Quinnipiac freshman-standout goalie Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.) to the far left corner.

In the second period, Quinnipiac jumped out to a 4-2 lead after outshooting Union 19-5 in the second frame. Hansen scored his first goal of the season - also on the power play - on a blast from just above the face-off circle. After Jason Walters scored for Union to pull within one, Leitch scored his second goal of the game.

On the play, the Bobcats had a 5-on-3 advantage. Senior captain Dan Henningson (Edmonton, Alb.) handled the puck to the right of the Dutchmen's goal before spinning and finding Leitch between the face-off circles. Leitch's blast from the point rattled home after connecting with the right post.

Through two periods, Quinnipiac had taken just three penalties while also converting on three-of-six power play opportunities.

Down the stretch, Leitch scored his third goal for his first career hat trick off a pass by David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.). After a Lane Caffaro goal with just under five minutes to play, Sorteberg netted his career-best second goal of the game on a pass from Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.)on the Dutchmen's empty net.

In goal, Pisellini turned in his first career 30-save performance, stopping 32 for the game including 20 in the final period. His counterpart, Milan, had 30 saves.

Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in an ECAC Hockey match-up set for 7 p.m.
