Harvard Blows By No. 16 Clarkson
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Nick Coskren scored two goals
and the Harvard men's hockey team netted three goals in less than
seven minutes in the first period to defeat No. 16 Clarkson, 5-1,
Friday night at Bright Hockey Center.
Sophomores Michael Del Mauro, Joe Smith and Matt McCollem also
scored for the Crimson (3-2-0, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey), with Smith and
McCollem adding assists. Freshman Matt Hoyle made 23 saves, as
Harvard improved to 3-0-0 at home and defeated Clarkson for the
first time since 2005-06.
Lauri Tuohimaa scored for the Golden Knights, who got 18 saves from
Tim Karpowich. The Crimson killed all six Clarkson power plays and
went 2 for 5 on its man advantages. Clarkson held a 24-23 shots
advantage.
The win lifted Harvard past idle Cornell into first place in the
ECAC Hockey standings. Dartmouth and Princeton also won their games
to keep pace with the Crimson.
Del Mauro got the Crimson on the board as the first period
approached its midway point. Smith forechecked hard, harassing a
Clarkson defenseman and deflecting his outlet pass. Del Mauro
intercepted the puck in the left circle and fired a shot to the
short side for his first collegiate goal.
Harvard scored a power-play goal for the fifth straight game almost
as soon as its second man advantage started. Doug Rogers won the
faceoff on the left dot back to fellow junior Alex Biega. The point
man pulled the puck toward the middle of the zone and let go a low
shot that Coskren redirected through Karpowich's five hole.
Smith made it 3-0 less than two minutes later, at the 16:20 mark.
Following a dominant shift by his line in the offensive zone, Jimmy
Fraser went off for a change while fellow senior Steve Rolecek
cycled the puck behind the net and freshman Colin Moore picked it
up on the left boards. Smith jumped onto the ice for Fraser and
skated toward the left post. He was there to bang in a pinpoint
cross-ice pass from Moore.
The Golden Knights cut the lead to 3-1 with just 35 seconds left in
the period. Brandon DeFazio passed from behind the net to Tuohimaa
in front for the quick finish. The shot was Clarkson's eighth and
final of the period, while the Crimson put six shots on goal.
After four goals in the first period, it took nearly 18 minutes for
either team to find the net in the second. Sophomore Matt McCollem
laid a big hit to take the puck from a Clarkson player behind the
Golden Knight's net and sent a pass in front to Coskren, who
one-timed the puck over the shoulder of Karpowich for a 4-1
lead.
On the other end, Hoyle was strong in net, holding Clarkson
scoreless in the frame despite a 9-6 edge in shots for the Golden
Knights.
McCollem wrapped up the scoring with the only goal of the third, on
the power play. Senior Brian McCafferty passed across the point to
his co-captain Fraser, who fired a hard shot toward the left post.
McCollem deflected it out of the air and in to make it 5-1 at 7:36
of the third. Harvard held an 11-7 edge in third-period shots.
The Crimson faces its second ranked opponent in as many nights,
hosting No. 19 St. Lawrence Saturday at 7 p.m.
