Keller's Buzzer Beater Lifts Saints

CANTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore wing Jared Keller put a rebound back
past University of Vermont goaltender Rob Madore with eight-tenths
of a second to play in regulation, lifting St. Lawrence University
to a 4-3 upset of the 11th ranked Catamounts in a NCAA Division I
hockey game at Appleton Arena Saturday night.
The Saint win snapped a five-game win streak for Vermont, which
fell to 9-4-2 on the season while the Saints improved to 7-8-1 with
their second win of the season over a ranked team from Hockey East
at Appleton Arena.
Saint freshman goalie Robby Moss earned the win with 20 saves in
his first home start while Madore, also a rookie, finished with 27
saves. Moss picked up his second straight team over a ranked team
after topping Massachusetts by the same score in his first
collegiate start two weeks ago.
“That was a great hockey game to finish up the first
semester with,” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “Vermont is
a highly skilled team and we always have great games with them. We
have had some dramatic wins in the series in the past, but probably
none like this one.”
The Catamounts opened the scoring 7:02 into the game when junior
wing Viktor Stalberg slid the puck along the ice on a UVM power
play and it hit the leg of a sliding Saint defender and deflected
past Moss. The Saints came right back with two goals in just 2:17
to take a 2-1 lead. Senior center Casey Parenteau scored the first
after a Vermont turnover right in front of goalie Rob Madore,
Parenteau firing his fourth of the year into the upper corner at
9:59. Senior defenseman Zach Miskovic then gunned a shot from the
center slot and while Madore was able to stop the initial shot,
rookie wing Mark Armstrong gathered in the rebound and put it just
under the crossbar for his second of the year at 12:16.
Vermont tied the game just 36 seconds into the second period as
Colin Vock completed a rush with a dipping wrist shot which
trickled just inside the far post off Moss’ pads. Both teams
had their chances to take a lead through the remainder of the
period, but the two goaltenders prevented further scoring and the
two teams headed into the third period tied at 2-2.
The Saints took a 3-2 lead 4:57 into the third period as senior
defenseman Shawn Fensel poked the puck past Madore in a scramble in
front of the UVM net on a power play, but senior center Dean Strong
tied it for the Catamounts at 8:41 as he broke into the SLU zone
and backhanded a shot just under the crossbar for his second of the
year.
The game seemed destined for overtime despite some great SLU
chances late in the third, but senior defenseman Zach Miskovic
started the game winning play with a rush from his own blueline as
time was running out. Miskovic put a dipping shot on net which
Madore stopped, but the rebound kicked to the side and Keller
chipped it into the net for his first goal of the season and the
win with under a second to play.
The Saints won for only the second time in the last seven games
against the Catamounts and snapped a two-game losing streak against
Vermont.
“Hopefully we can get some of our walking wounded back to
full health and really build on this when we resume play after
Christmas,” Marsh added. “We have had a number of guys
step up to fill in for our injured players and to pick up a couple
of wins while playing without some key guys says a lot for what we
are trying to do in building depth.”
