OXFORD, Ohio – Junior Jarod Palmer had a goal and an
assist, including the game winning marker as the third-ranked Miami
University men’s hockey team edged Rensselaer, 3-1, this
evening at Steve Cady Arena. With the win the RedHawks improve to
11-3-3 overall (10-2-2 CCHA), while the Engineers fall to 3-12-1
(2-5-0).
Palmer tallied the go-ahead goal on the power play at 12:56 of the
second period. Freshman defenseman Chris Wideman (St. Louis, MO)
took a shot from the blue line that Palmer redirected past RPI
senior goaltender Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria).
Sophomore Carter Camper (Rock River, OH) slid a pass across the
low slot to senior Justin Mercier (Erie, PA) to give the RedHawks a
1-0 lead, on the power play, at 5:43 of the first period. Palmer
(Fridley, MN) earned the second assist.
RPI held a 10-9 edge in shots in the opening stanza.
The Engineers tied the game with a power play goal at 10:16 of the
second period. With a 5-on-3 advantage freshman Patrick Cullen
(Washinton, DC) found sophomore Chase Polacek (Edina, MN) at the
right point. Polacek ripped a shot along the ice, beating RedHawks
freshman netminder Cody Reichard (Celina, OH) five-hole.
Lange made a number of key saves including a pair of breakaway
stops on Miami forwards Andy Miele (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) and
Mercier, midway through the second frame.
Senior Brian Kaufman (Shoreview, MN) added an empty net goal at
19:05 of the third to bring the game to its final margin of
3-1.
Reichard (5-2-2) made 23 saves, while Lange (2-9-1) finished with
39 stops. Miami was 2-9 on the power play, while RPI finished 1-5
on the man advantage.
The Engineers and RedHawks meet again tomorrow afternoon for a
4:35pm start. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and will be
webcast at www.wrpi.org.
