Bobcats Battle to Scoreless Tie with Cornell

Boxscore

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team played to a 0-0 tie Cornell University in an ECAC Hockey match-up at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats drop to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ECAC Hockey competition while Cornell goes to 1-0-1 on the year. The scoreless tie is the first in Quinnipiac men's ice hockey history.

Freshman goalie Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.) turned in his third straight 20-save performance, totaling 23 stops for his first career shutout. Pisellini was impressive down the stretch, stopping a game-high nine saves in the third period. Pisellini has now allowed just four goals in over 288 minutes in net for a 0.83 goals-against average while turning away 107 of 111 shots on goal for a .964 save percentage.

His counterpart, Cornell's Ben Scrivens had 25 saves including three in overtime.

"I'm a little confused right now and can't really say if I'm happy or disappointed," Head coach Rand Pecknold said. "I thought there were some positives to take from the game - Nick [Pisellini] was amazing this weekend and I think our defensive unit played great tonight. We need to stop taking bad penalties, and some of our better offensive players need to start playing."

For the second straight game, the action was marred by a slew of penalties. After a 1-0 loss to Colgate on Friday that saw 32 penalties between both teams, Quinnipiac and Cornell were whistled for 38 tonight. The Bobcats' penalty kill was in lock-down mode again as it stopped nine Cornell power plays, including a 5-on-3 Big Red advantage with less than two minutes to play in overtime.

At the 10:31 mark of the second period, following a slashing penalty called on Quinnipiac, Cornell's Evan Barlow won the face-off and broke through the Bobcats' defense. Barlow, one-on-one with Pisellini, was tripped up by Quinnipiac's Brett Dickinson (Furlong, Pa.) from behind as he was taking the shot, and was then awarded a penalty shot. The senior wing started at the bottom of the Bobcats' logo at center ice and moved diagonally towards the Quinnipiac student section. His blast from the right face-off circle was guided towards the bottom right corner of the net, but Pisellini made a sprawling save to stop Cornell's scoring opportunity.

With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Cornell's Tyler Roeszler picked the puck up behind the Bobcats' net and found Colin Greening streaking towards the crease. Roeszler found a seam between the Quinnipiac defense and connected with Greening. Greening's one-timer from close range was smothered by Pisellini to preserve the scoreless tie late in the final period.

"From a young age, you're taught to watch for his first move and then adjust according," Pisellini explained. "His first move was his only move and he opened up for a shot, so I just dropped down and made the stop."

Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 when they host Princeton University at 7 p.m. in an ECAC Hockey match-up at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.
