Tigers Edged by Cornell
PRINCETON -- Cornell's Tyler Mugford scored early in the third
period to lead 17th-ranked Cornell to a 1-0 win over the
ninth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team on Friday afternoon at
Hobey Baker Rink in front of a capacity crowd and a national
television audience on ESPNU.
The game was an early season battle among the teams picked first
and third in the ECAC Hockey media and coaches preseason poll that
lived up to its billing with play going end-to-end and great
scoring chances at both ends of the ice.
Neither team was able to score in either of the first two periods.
In the first period the teams battled from the get-go with
Princeton holding an 8-3 shots edge after a period. Princeton again
outshot Cornell 15-10 in the second period but couldn't crack
Cornell netminder Ben Scrivens whose save total grew throughout the
night.
Princeton started the third period with a two-man advantage for
1:19 but couldn't take advantage as Cornell killed the entire
penalty off. Moments after returning to even strength the Big Red
got on the scoreboard when Mugford scored on a wristshot high on
the glove side of Princeton junior netminder Zane Kalemba off the
rush. Jared Seminoff assisted on the goal.
Princeton had several chances to even the score but couldn't crack
Scrivens, who stopped 20 shots in the third period alone and
finished the night with 43 saves in the shutout. Kalemba made 18
saves in the Princeton goal. Junior Dan Bartlett led all Tigers
with seven shots on goal, with sophomore Taylor Fedun adding six
shots and senior Brett Wilson four.
Princeton falls to 1-1 with the loss while Cornell is now 1-0.
Princeton hosts Colgate tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
