UND Scores Last to Top Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-North Dakota scored twice in 90 seconds to
rally from a goal down and defeat the Harvard men's hockey team,
4-3, in a back-and-forth affair Saturday night at Bright Hockey
Center.
Each team led twice, with Matt Frattin putting North Dakota (7-8-1)
on top to stay at 7:33 of the third period. Freshmen Alex Killorn
and Daniel Moriarty and sophomore Michael Del Mauro scored for the
Crimson (4-6-2), with Moriarty's goal putting Harvard on top early
in the third period.
Moriarty added an assist for the Crimson, while sophomore Michael
Biega had two helpers. Freshman Matt Hoyle made 22 saves for
Harvard, but Brad Eidsness made 33 to pick up the win for UND.
Five of the eight goals came on the power play, with North Dakota
going 3 for 5 with the man advantage and Harvard converting on two
of its eight chances.
Three goals were scored in the first period, all on two-man
advantages. Harvard struck first, barely two minutes into the game.
Michael Biega got the puck from brother Alex Biega high on the
right side and fed it down low to Killorn. The rookie beat Eidsness
from the bottom of the circle for his third goal of the season.
Starting about five minutes into the frame, Harvard took three
penalties in an 89-second span, leading to two five-on-three goals
for North Dakota, which had not recorded a shot on goal to that
point. Ryan Duncan had the first goal at 7:59, standing at the
right post and tapping in a pass from Brad Miller from the other
side of the zone. Chay Genoway scored just 54 seconds later, on a
slap shot from the left point.
Harvard held a 14-8 edge in shots in the period, with 12 shots
coming on the power play, including a five-minute advantage when
Chris Vande Velde was whistled for a hitting-from-behind major and
game misconduct. Eidsness and UND held strong, however, and took a
2-1 lead to the locker room.
The Crimson played a solid second period, holding a 10-6 edge in
shots and knotting the score in the middle of the frame. Junior
Chad Morin got the puck inside the top of the right circle from
freshman Daniel Moriarty and sent a high shot toward goal. Del
Mauro redirected the puck past Eidsness to make it 2-2.
Following a penalty-filled first period, each team got just one
full power play in the second. The Crimson killed a high-sticking
penalty early in the frame, and North Dakota survived an
interference penalty late.
North Dakota was called for a cross-checking penalty with eight
seconds left in the period, and Harvard took advantage eight
seconds into the third on Moriarty's second goal of the season.
Michael Biega threw the puck off the boards from the left corner to
sophomore Pier-Olivier Michaud at the point. He sent the puck
toward the net, and Moriarty collected it at the left post and
tucked a backhand shot past Eidsness.
UND battled back, killing a Harvard power play and converting on
its own man advantage at 6:03. David Toews found his way in front
to tip a Ryan Martens shot over the blocker shoulder of Hoyle.
Frattin had the game winner 90 seconds later, scoring on a
tough-angle shot from the right side.
The teams played at even strength the rest of the way. Each team
had 12 shots in the third period, but Eidsness stopped the
Crimson's final 11 to hold on for the win.
Harvard now has a three-week layoff before returning to action Dec.
27, when it faces Lake Superior State in the opening round of the
Badger Hockey Showdown in Madison, Wis.
