Second-Period Surge Sparks Saints

HAMILTON, NY -- Down two key offensive cogs due to injury, St. Lawrence University's men's hockey team had its most productive period of the season with a four-goal second and skated to a 5-2 ECAC Hockey victory over Colgate in Hamilton Friday night.

The Saints were without centers Brock McBride and Aaron Bogosian due to injury, but Casey Parenteau scored two goals and the Saints came away with their regular season victory at Colgate's Starr Rink since 2001, improving to 6-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC play.

Both the Saints and Colgate are experiencing similar seasons, playing well enough to win, but having trouble scoring goals. Colgate has not scored more than two goals in an intercollegiate game since October and the Saints have scored more than two just once since Nov. 8, but the Saints were on their game on Friday.\

"I thought the second period was as good as we have played in a single period all season,' said Saint coach Joe Marsh. 'We had some guys really step up in terms of offensive production and Alex Petizian was very solid in goal despite not seeing a lot of shots."

St. Lawrence outshot Colgate 37-17 with Petizian making 15 saves. Both Colgate goals came on the power play.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead as Travis Vermeulen took the puck from Alex Curran near the blue line, circled behind the net and sent a pass back out into the deep slot where Mat t Generous one-timed a bomb past Raider goalie Alex Evin for his third of the season at 5:42. Colgate came back to tie it up on an abbreviated power play as Brian Day tipped a shot from the center slot by Nick St. Pierre past Petizian at 16:24.

The Saints had their most productive period of the season in the second period, scoring four times to take a 5-1 lead.

Rookie Mark Armstrong scored his first collegiate goal to open the scoring flurry as Jacob Drewiske worked the puck out from a group of players in front of the net and Armstrong wristed a shot past Evin at 8:36 to make it a 2-1 game. The Saints then added a power play goal at the 12:09 mark as Curran deflected a shot from the point by Zach Miskovic into the upper corner at 12:09.

Persistence by Mike McKenzie, who took three shots from in tight, resulted in the fourth Saint goal as Casey Parenteau finally collected a loose rebound and put it into the net at 15:16. The goal was followed by a brief melee behind the Colgate net and four players, the Saints Generous and McKenzie and Colgate's Corbin McPherson and Austin Smith were sent off the ice, receiving two for roughing and ten minute misconducts.

Parenteau completed the big offensive period with his second in a span of just over three minutes, scoring on a power play at 18:54 from Jeff Caister and DeVergilio, who was credited with his third assist of the period.

The Saints nearly added to their lead as Curran was robbed on a shorthanded two on one early in the third, but Colgate came away with the only goal of the period when David McIntyre scored on a power play tip in at 16:53.
