Boxscore
HAMDEN, Conn. – David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) scored a
goal and added two assists as the Quinnipiac University men’s
ice hockey team defeated Providence, 5-2, Friday night at the TD
Banknorth Sports Center. The Bobcats benefited from a three-goal
outburst in the first period. The game marked the first time that
Quinnipiac had ever hosted a team from Hockey East. The win
improved the Bobcats’ record to 7-6-1, while Providence falls
to 2-12-1 this season with the loss.
“I thought we played pretty well at times and were
opportunistic offensively,” said Quinnipiac Head Coach Rand
Pecknold. “Nick [Pisellini] did a good job in net. It’s
always nice to beat any Hockey East team and we are happy to do it
at home.”
Brandon Wong (Victoria, British Columbia) scored his sixth goal of
the year, and 46th of his career, just 1:55 into the game. The
junior center fired a shot past Providence’s Chris Mannix
from just below the hash marks. Wong received a pass from Greg Holt
(Mt Sinai, N.Y.) in the neutral zone and skated into the offensive
zone before snapping the shot beneath the Providence goalie’s
pads. Andy Meyer (St. Louis, Mo.) was also credited with an assist
on the goal, his first of the year.
The Bobcats’ made it a two-goal game 8:34 into the first.
Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alberta) moved the puck along to the
boards to Meyer at the point. Meyer passed the puck to the right
point for Brett Dickinson (Furlong, Pa.). Dickinson’s shot
into traffic ricocheted off a Friar defenseman in the slot and
landed on the stick of Beaudoin. The Quinnipiac winger wristed a
quick shot into the net before Mannix could move to his right and
make the save. Beaudoin’s goal was the 20th of his
career.
Marshall’s seventh of the season pushed the Bobcats lead to
three goals before the end of the first period. Marshall picked up
a loose puck behind the Providence goal and skated untouched to the
top of the slot where he dropped the puck back to Dan Henningson
(Edmonton, Alberta) at the point. As a Providence winger came out
to challenge Henningson, he found Marshall in the right face-off
circle. Marshall dragged the puck around Mannix and into the net
off his backhand. Marshall’s 58th career goal moves him into
a tie for fourth place in the program’s Division I history
and 10th all-time with Ryan Olson ‘02.
Providence’s Chris Eppich put the Friars on the board midway
through the second period to cut the Bobcat lead to two, 3-1.
Eppich collected a rebound after Matt Germain blasted a shot over
the net. The puck bounced off the glass behind Quinnipiac goalie
Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.) and back out into the left side of
the crease where Eppich was waiting.
Quinnipiac’s Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, British Columbia)
pushed the Bobcats’ lead back to three, 4-1, with less than
five minutes to play in the period. Leitch’s received the
puck in the left face-off circle after Marshall won a face-off.
Leitch’s shot from the half-boards found the top left corner
of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) scored his second goal of the season
just 28 seconds into the third period. Marshall started the play by
finding Leitch in the neutral zone with a long pass. Leitch gloved
the puck out of the air and quickly centered the puck to Lampe at
the blueline who came in alone on Mannix. Lampe deked out the
goaltender to his left and slid the puck under the right
outstretched pad.
Matt Bergland scored the Friars’ second goal of the game
midway through the third. John Cavanagh centered to Bergland in the
slot for the quick one-timer that found its way off the inside of
Pisellini’s pad and into the net.
Pisellini finished with 25 saves to earn his sixth win of the
season. Mannix turned aside 23 Quinnipiac shots in the loss.
Marshall moved closer to joining Leitch as the only current members
of the Bobcats in the 100-point club with his three points in the
game. He now has 96 career points on 58 goals and 38 assists.
The Bobcats are idle until Dec. 29-30 when it travels to Storrs,
Conn. for the UConn Invitational. Quinnipiac will play Merrimack
College on Monday, Dec. 29 at 4 p.m., prior to the late game of
