Harvard Suffers First Home Loss
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — North Dakota scored four goals in each
of the last two periods to pull away to a 10-1 defeat of the
Harvard men’s hockey team Friday night at Bright Hockey
Center, handing the Crimson its first home loss of the season.
Ryan Martens and Matt Watkins led UND (6-8-1) with two goals and
two assists each. Brad Eidsness made 39 saves to overcome a 40-37
edge in shots for Harvard (4-5-2). Sophomore defenseman Chris
Huxley scored for the Crimson.
North Dakota took a quick two-goal lead with a pair of tallies
barely a minute apart in the first period. Brad Malone got UND
started with an unassisted goal at 7:15, stealing the puck from a
Harvard player near the goal and slipping it past Crimson freshman
Matt Hoyle. Brad Miller made it 2-0 just 62 seconds later. Darcy
Zajac and Matt Watkins carried the puck into the zone, and a pass
ricocheted off a Harvard stick to Miller, who lifted a backhand
high to the glove side.
Harvard had good possession and chances to halve the UND lead on a
power play starting at 11:36, but Eidsness made three saves during
the man advantage and North Dakota took a two-goal lead to the
intermission. UND held an 11-7 edge in first-period shots.
UND again scored a pair of rapid-fire goals early in the second
period. Watkins had the first, assisted by Martens, just 1:21 into
the frame. Andrew Kozek made it 4-0 barely two minutes later, from
Miller and Ryan Duncan.
The Crimson battled back and picked up its play, cutting into the
UND lead at 5:05. Huxley scored his first goal of the year,
creeping in from the blue line and beating Eidsness with a quick
shot after sophomore Michael Biega slipped a pass to him in the
slot from the right side.
Just 30 seconds after scoring, Harvard had a great chance to turn
the tide with a two-minute, two-man advantage when North Dakota was
called for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct on the same
whistle. The power plays resulted in several chances, and the
Crimson put eight shots on goal while up two men, but Eidsness
stopped them all.
North Dakota took advantage of the momentum from its big penalty
kill, adding two more goals to outscore Harvard, 4-1, in the second
period despite a 21-12 edge in shots for the Crimson. David Toews
had the fifth UND goal, at 9:39, and Matt Watkins added another in
the final minute of the period.
UND pulled away with four goals in a penalty-plagued third period.
Ryan Martens had two of the tallies, one at even strength and one
on the power play, as North Dakota finished 4 for 9 with the man
advantage. Harvard was 0 for 5.
Hoyle made 17 saves in two periods of action. Sophomore Ryan
Caroll made eight stops, and junior John Riley had two.
The teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. Harvard’s
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting
non-perishable foods at the door to benefit the Allston-Brighton
Food Pantry.
