Mugford's Return Big Lift for Big Red
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Tyler Mugford had a pair of assists in
his return from injury on Friday night as the Cornell men's hockey
team picked up a 4-1 win over Clarkson at Lynah Rink. Cornell
improves to 6-1-2 on the year and 5-0-2 in ECAC Hockey, while
Clarkson falls to 2-8-3 on the year and 1-6-0 in league action.
Mugford, who returned to the Cornell lineup after missing the last
five games, earned an assist on Dan Nichols' game-winning goal in
the first period, then added an assist on Joe Devin's second goal
of the season in the second period. Sophomore defenseman Mike Devin
added a goal and an assist for the Big Red, while Colin Greening
added a power-play tally for the final margin.
Cornell got on the board at the 8:23 mark of the first period when
Mike Devin took a pass from Justin Krueger and ripped a one-timer
that went high over the glove hand of Clarkson netminder Paul
Karpowich. Two and a half minutes later, Nichols tallied his first
goal of the season by deflecting home a shot from Joe Scali after
Mugford dug the puck out of the corner as the Big Red took a 2-0
lead midway through the first period.
In the second, Joe Devin tallied his second goal of the season,
banging in a rebound from a shot by Mugford that was initially
saved by Karpowich to give the Big Red a 3-0 advantage. Clarkson
cut into the lead at the 5:14 mark of the third period as Louke
Oakley, while falling to his knees at the blue line, lifted a
floating puck at the goal, where it was deflected around the leg of
Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens and just inside the junior
netminder's right post.
Cornell got the advantage back to three goals with a power-play
tally at the 17:29 mark of the third period. Blake Gallagher sent a
puck to Brendon Nash at the blue line, who chipped it into the air
to Greening, camped out between the circles. Greening snatched the
puck out of midair, turned and dropped it to his stick before
slotting it into the open net while Karpowich was still at the
other post.
Cornell would finish the game 1-for-4 on the power play while
holding Clarkson scoreless in its four attempts and just two shots
with the man advantage. Scrivens made 13 saves for the victory,
while Karpowich stopped 14 shots in taking the loss.
Cornell closes out the fall semester on Saturday night, playing
host to St. Lawrence in a 7 p.m. game at Lynah Rink.
