Golden Knights Come Up Short

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Golden Knights' freshman line combined to give Clarkson University a one-goal lead midway through the third period, but Carleton University, from Ottawa, ONT, rallied back with the game's final three goals to earn a 5-3 victory in exhibition play before 2,656 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

Freshman Julien Cayer (Lonqueuil, QUE) put in a rebound off of classmate Jake Morley's (Ogdensburg, NY) shot at 9:14 of the final frame to put Clarkson on top 3-2. Carleton, guided by former Clarkson coach Fred Parker, however put a damper on the Knights' celebration with three goals over the final four minutes of play to gain the win.

Justin Caruana slipped in a low backhand shot at 16:32 to tie the score, and 57 seconds later Brandon MacLean connected for the game-winner. Francis Walker sealed the win, the first ever for a Canadian team in 10 games at 18-year-old Cheel Arena, with an empty-net goal with .8 seconds left.

The Ravens opened the scoring with Caruana's first goal of the game at 3:52 of the first period. The Knights, sophomore defenseman Dan Reed (Walworth, NY) finished off a pass from senior Chris D'Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) at 9:41 making it a 1-1 game after the opening 20 minutes.

Clarkson went on top in the middle frame with a power-play goal from sophomore defenseman Bryan Rufenach (Cameron, ONT) at 9:13. Junior Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) assisted.

Carleton made it 2-2 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal from Michael Testa at 3:43 of the third.

Clarkson, which rested several regulars for the game, out shot the Ravens 42-24, including a 35-12 advantage through the first 40 minutes.

Freshman Richie LaVeau (Arlington Heights, IL), making his first collegiate appearance in the Clarkson goal, posted 19 saves.

The Knights went 1-of-7 on the power play, while Carleton was 1-of-3 with the man advantage,

Defending ECAC Hockey regular season champion, Clarkson opens up league play next weekend when it hosts Brown and Yale.
