
Weekend Update: Quest For Cup Remains Tight

ALBANY, N.Y. -- As the pursuit of the league
crown gets closer in sight, Clarkson is the only team to have
clinched a first-round bye. Four other teams control their
own destinies for the other three byes. Seven of the eight
overall home-ice spots have been claimed. Each season ECAC
Hockey sees its share of significant accomplishments on and off the
ice. Fans were able to witness a rare feat as a team
netminder was credited with a goal last
night.
At Harvard 6, Yale 1: Sophomore Kyle Richter
made 37 saves and became the first Crimson goaltender on record to
score a goal as Harvard defeated rival Yale. Winners of
five of its last six Harvard was led by senior Jon Pelle who netted
two goals and an assist in helping the Crimson clinch a home
playoff series and move into a tie with Quinnipiac for fourth-place
in league standings. Sophomore Doug Rogers had a goal and two
assists, while senior Paul Dufault and freshman Matt McCollem each
notched two helpers for the Crimson.
No. 12 Clarkson 3 at Union 3 (ot): Senior
Steve Zalewski reached a career milestone, 100 career points, and a
pair of freshmen contributed goals as Clarkson skated to an
overtime tie at Union. With the one point in league play, the
Golden Knights clinched a top four spot in league standings and
gained a first-round bye in the upcoming playoffs. Junior
co-captain Lane Caffaro netted the game-tying goal and recorded
assists on two other tallies as Union clinched home-ice for the
league playoffs. David Leggio finished the game with 34 saves
for Clarkson, while Corey Milan stopped 24 for the Dutchmen,
including a point-blank attempt by Zalewski in overtime.
At No. 17 Princeton 7, Colgate 2: Now
winners of 11 of its last 13 games, Princeton received three-point
nights from junior Lee Jubinville and freshmen Kevin Lohry and Mike
Kramer as the Tigers downed Colgate. Princeton's win,
combined with a Clarkson tie, moved the Tigers within a point of
first place. The Tigers outshot Colgate 43-17 on the
night. Princeton sophomore netminder Zane Kalemba made 15
saves for the win, while Mark Dekanich and Charles Long combined
for 36 saves in the loss for the Raiders.
Cornell 3 at No. 19 Quinnipiac 2 (ot):
Forward Michael Kennedy's goal with 19.4 seconds remaining in
overtime gave Cornell a road victory over Quinnipiac. Ben
Scrivens stopped 33 shots in the victory for the Big Red, which
moves into third-place in league standings, three points behind
second-place Princeton, who Cornell will battle tonight. Bud
Fisher stopped 21 shots in taking the loss for the Bobcats, who
move into fourth-place tie with Harvard. Forward David
Marshall had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats on the
night.
Brown 5 at Dartmouth 4: Junior Ryan Garbutt
scored a goal and assisted two others, including the game-winning
goal, as the Bears earned their second win over Dartmouth this
season. Big Green defenseman Evan Stephens (1-1-2) and
forward Nick Johnson (0-2-2) each recorded two points in the
loss. Bears' net minder Dan Rosen made 38 saves, while
posting his 14th game this season with at least 30 saves. Joe
Grossman made 19 stops for the Big Green.
At Rensselaer 4, St. Lawrence 2: Freshman
Tyler Helfrich had a pair of goals to lead Rensselaer to a
win over St. Lawrence at Houston Field House. RPI's Mathias
Lange finished with 26 saves to pick up the win while the Saints'
John Hallas stopped 22 shots in defeat. Defensemen Matt
Generous and Bobby Torney tallied the goals for the Saints.
Neither team could capitalize on the man-advantage with the Saints
going 0-4 and Engineers 0-2.
