ALBANY, N.Y. -- Coaches look for clutch play
this time of the year and they witnessed it Friday night. In
ECAC Hockey action last night fans were treated to a shutout, a hat
trick, comebacks, and a thrilling overtime win.
No. 11 Clarkson 4 at Brown 3 (ot): Senior
David Cayer scored with 47.7 seconds remaining in overtime to lift
the Golden Knights to a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over
Brown. With losses by Princeton and Quinnipiac Friday, the
Golden Knights extended their league-lead in ECAC Hockey to four
points with a 12-3-2 conference mark. Clarkson outshot Brown
34-29. Senior netminder David Leggio finished with 26 stops
for the Golden Knights, while Dan Rosen stopped 30 in the
loss. Forward Aaron Volpatti netted two goals in defeat for
the Bears.
At Harvard 3, No. 17 Princeton 2: Sophomore
Doug Rogers recorded his first career hat trick to help the Crimson
down the Tigers. Sophomore goaltender Kyle Richter made 33
saves as the Crimson also gained valuable points in the ECAC Hockey
standings by defeating the second-place Tigers. Defenseman
senior Mike Moore had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, and
netminder Zane Kalemba made 18 saves. The Tigers outshot the
Cimson 35-21 in the contest, but Harvard bettered the Tigers
converting on two of seven power-plays to the Tigers' one of eight
chances.
At Colgate 4, Rensselaer 0: The Raiders
earned a shutout win over Rensselaer at Starr Rink. It was
the second straight shutout for the Raiders over the
Engineers. The win moved Colgate head coach Don Vaughan into
a tie for the school record for coaching victories with legendary
bench boss Terry Slater, who coached Colgate from 1977 to
1992. The win was Vaughan's 251st, and he needs one more to
pass Slater and become the winningest coach in Colgate hockey
history. Senior goaltender Mark Dekanich had to make just
nine saves to earn his second consecutive shutout, and his fifth of
the season, which ties the school record.
Union 3 at Cornell 2: In a physical contest
the Dutchmen rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Cornell at
Lynah Rink. Matt Cook scored a career-high two goals in the
game and freshman Andrew Buote picked up the game-winner for the
Dutchmen, who captured the season series with the Big Red for the
first time since the 1997-98 season. Cook becomes the first
Union player to net a multiple-goal game this season. Buote's
game-winner marked the second on the season for the rookie.
Josh Coyle and Jason Walters each recorded two assists in the
game.
At Yale 4, St. Lawrence 3: Yale erased an
early 2-0 deficit and scored four of the last five goals to earn a
win over St. Lawrence before 3,344 at Ingalls Rink. Forwards
Blair Yaworski had two goals and Broc Little had a goal and two
assists to lead the Bulldogs, who outshot the Saints 30-26 in a
game that included short-handed goals by both sides. The
Bulldogs went two of two with a man advantage. Forward Brock
McBride netted a goal and added an assist for the Saints.
At Dartmouth 7, No. 16 Quinnipiac 2: After
spotting the Bobcats a 2-0 lead, the Big Green erupted for seven
goals to earn a much needed league win. Dartmouth outshot the
Bobcats, 43-to-23 for its fourth 40-plus shot game of the
season. The victory ends Dartmouth's six-game winless streak,
the longest of the season. Netminder Mike Devine finished
with 21 saves for the Big Green, while Bud Fisher and Pat McGann
combined for 36 stops for Quinnipiac. Forward Scott Fleming
netted two goals for the Big Green.
