Weekend Update: Top Teams Hold Ground

Colgate's Vaughan Reaches Milestone

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In a night that witnessed a record crowd and a milestone by a head coach, there were no real surprises in the first night of weekend play with Clarkson, Princeton and Quinnipiac prevailing.  The home team earned two points on three occasions and one point on one occasion last evening in ECAC Hockey play. 

Harvard 3 at Union 2:  Sophomore Alex Biega and freshman Matt McCollem scored goals in the first period, and senior Paul Dufault netted the eventual game-winner on a power-play in the third period to hand Union its first conference home loss of the season.  Crimson sophomore netminder Kyle Richter totaled 24 saves on the night improving his personal record to 9-10-3 and evened Harvard's league record to 7-7-2.  After trailing 3-0 the Dutchmen mounted a late rally in the third period with goals by forwards Matt Cook and Sam Bowles.

Colgate 2 at St. Lawrence 1:  Senior forward Tyler Burton scored twice within the first four minutes of the game to help earn Colgate a 2-1 win at St. Lawrence for the first time since 2001-02 season..  Linemates Jesse Winchester and Peter Bogdanich assisted on each goal.      The game marked the 250th victory of Colgate head coach and SLU alum Don Vaughan's career.  Goaltender Mark Dekanich earned the win after making 26 saves, while Saints' netminder Jodn Hallas finished the game with 25 stops as each team put 27 shots on goal.

Dartmouth 4 at Renssealer 4 (ot):  The Engineers spotted the Big Green a 4-0 lead for the first half of the contest, but stormed back to score the next four and tie the game at four, which is how it ended.  Eight different players notched goals in the contest with RPI's                     linemates Tyler Helfrich, Chase Polacek, and Scott Halpern each recording one goal and one assist to lead the Engineers.  Dartmouth forward Jon Grecu posted two assists to lead Dartmouth.  Rensselaer junior netminder Mathias Lange made 15 saves in relief of Jordan Alford, who stopped nine of the 12 shots he faced.  Dartmouth's Joe Grossman stopped 29 shots on the night. 

At No. 16 Quinnipiac 5, Yale 1:  In front of a 4,213 record crowd at TD Banknorth Sports Center, the Bobcats had forwards Bryan Leitch, Dan Travis, and Brandon Wong each score a goal and add an assist as the Quinnipiac defeated Yale, 5-1.  Despite outshooting Quinnipiac 26-25, the Bulldogs could only net one goal scored by sophomore forward Sean Backman in the second period for Yale, his 13th on the year.  Yale netminders Billy Blase and Alec Richards combined to make 20 saves, while Bobcats' goaltender Bud Fisher improved his personal record to 9-4-3, stopping 25 attempts.

At No. 13 Clarkson 4, Cornell 1:  Senior Golden Knights netminder David Leggio stopped 32 shots in defeating Cornell, in an ECAC Hockey showdown.  The Golden Knights now have won their eighth consecutive home game against league foes at Cheel Arena, hold a three-point lead in the standings with an 11-3-1 ECAC Hockey mark.  Big Red netminder Ben Scrivens stopped 21 shots in the loss.  Cornell outshot the Knights 33-25.  Clarkson was 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off six of seven Big Red power-play opportunities.

At No. 19 Princeton 3, Brown 2:  The Tigers, winners of eight of its last nine games,
scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the third period to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat Brown 3-2 at Hobey Baker Rink.  Freshman Cam Ritchie had a goal and an assist in the win, which was Princeton's fourth come-from-behind win in the last nine games.  Sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba made 26 saves for his 11th win and sophomore Bears' netminder Dan Rosen stopped 30 shots in the loss.
