ALBANY, NY -- With two weekends remaining
in league play, the race is wide open for the William J. Cleary
Cup. Clarkson (26 points) is clinging to a two-point lead,
but several teams, including Princeton (24 points) and Quinnipiac
(22 points), have narrowed the gap with the passing of each
week. All 12 teams will be in action this weekend in league
play.
Brown/Yale at Dartmouth/Harvard: Harvard
will play host to rivals Yale and Brown in its final regular-season
home weekend. The Crimson and Bulldogs are tied for fifth
place in league standings, one point out of fourth place and the
accompanying playoff bye. Harvard does not have a
double-digit goal scorer, but has not needed too many goals, as its
defense has allowed a league-best 1.94 G/GM in league play this
season. Both the Bulldogs and Crimson showcase disciplined
special teams, as they rank first and second in combined special
teams success in the league. The Big Green is locked in a
three-way tie for 10th place in ECAC Hockey play and has earned
points in three of its last four games. Look for Dartmouth
not to provide too many power-play chances for its opponents, as it
is the least penalized team in the nation averaging a mere 9.3
PIM/GM. Brown will look to repeat its success in the
beginning of the month when it swept Dartmouth and Harvard.
Senior forward Jeff Prough (4-9-13) is the Bears' leading scorer,
while sophomore Dan Rosen has been the mainstay between the pipes
with a .910 save percentage in league play.
No. 11 Clarkson/St. Lawrence at
Union/Rensselaer: The Golden Knights will look to
retain the familiar top spot in league standing when they make
their final road trip of the regular season to the Capital District
visiting Union Friday and Rensselaer Saturday. Clarkson edged
Union in the first meeting this season, 3-2 and the two teams have
split the league series the past four seasons. The Dutchmen
have showcased a peerless 8-2-5 home record at Messa Rink this
season and a stellar 4-2 record during televised games.
Having used four netminders this season the Saints come marching
into the Capital District surrendering 3.22 G/GM. Junior Zach
Miskovic has been a strong two-way player on defense leading a
reluctant defense and contributing on offense averaging (0.67 PPG)
for the Saints. The Engineers have welcomed the offensive
surge of freshmen forwards Chase Polacek (2-8-10) and Tyler
Helfrich in the last seven games.
Colgate/Cornell at No. 15 Princeton/No. 19
Quinnipiac: Looking to bounce back from two league
road losses last weekend, Quinnipiac will host Cornell and Colgate
this weekend. Last weekend's setbacks mark the fourth time
this season that Quinnipiac lost back-to-back games. In the
previous three occasions, Quinnipiac won the next game and has not
had a three-game losing streak since the 2005-06 season. The
third-place Bobcats get scoring from all positions, as sophomore
forward Brandon Wong is second in conference scoring averaging 1.22
PPG and junior defenseman Dan Henningson is tops among peers
averaging 0.83 PPG. Sitting alone in second place, Princeton
is also hosting the two league competitors this weekend. The
Tigers have won 10 of their last 12 games outscoring opponents
44-24 in that span. Princeton's success has been generated by
its offense that has scored a lead-leading 61 goals this
season. The Big Red, in the middle of the home-ice race, will
look to get on the board quickly in their road trip this
weekend. Cornell is a colorful 11-2-1 when scoring the game's
first goal, but 1-8-1 when yielding the first goal to the
opposition. The Raiders will look to continue the momentum
generated last weekend when they routed their opponents by a
combined score of 12-0. Senior netminder Mark Dekanich brings
a grand shutout streak of 212:14 into this weekend's action.
The shutout streak has already broken both the Colgate and ECAC
Hockey records.
