ALBANY, NY -- Last weekend's action answered a
few questions, but brought about even more postseason senarios that
will be played out in the final weekend of play. Clarkson and
Princeton are the only teams that have now clinched first-round
byes. The Golden Knights are just one point ahead of the
Tigers for the top spot in league standings, while others are
jockeying for positions.
Winners of 12 of its last 14 contests No. 12 Princeton secured a
first-round bye for the ECAC Hockey playoffs with a 7-2 win over
Colgate and a 2-1 win over Cornell Saturday night in front of a
sellout crowd at Hobey Baker Rink. Junior Lee Jubinville, and
freshmen Kevin Lohry and Mike Kramer each recorded three points in
the win over the Raiders. Princeton outshot Colgate
43-17. Tigers' sophomore netminder Zane Kalemba made 15 saves
for the win. The Tigers, who have never finished higher than
fourth in the regular season, were aided on offense by sophomore
Jody Pederson and junior Brett Wilson, who each scored in the win
over Cornell.
The Big Red earned a split last weekend as junior forward Michael
Kennedy netted a goal with 19.4 seconds remaining in overtime which
gave Cornell a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac Friday. Sophomore
goaltender Ben Scrivens stopped 33 shots for the victory for the
Big Red, who are now tied for fourth in the league
standings.
The Raiders were also winners in overtime as they bounced back from
Friday's defeat to hand Quinnipiac a 4-3 overtime loss.
Junior Peter Bogdanich scored with exactly one minute left in the
extra-session to lift Colgate back over .500 at 14-13-5
overall. Raiders' senior goaltender Mark Dekanich earned the
win for Colgate after making 26 saves.
No. 9 Clarkson is hanging onto first place in league play with its
eyes on the Cleary Cup, as the Golden Knights earned three points
in their weekend visit to the Capital District. Senior Steve
Zalewski notched his 100th career point with a power-play tally,
and freshmen Tom Pizzo and Brandon DeFazio also scored goals to
pace the Clarkson offense to a 3-3 tie at Union. Senior David
Leggio made 34 saves as Union outshot the Knights 37-27.
Clarkson upended Rensselaer Saturday, 3-1, as senior Nick Dodge set
a new team record for career shorthanded goals when he sealed the
Knights' win with an empty-net score with 44 seconds
remaining. Dodge has nine shorthanded tallies for his career,
including four this season.
With a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence Saturday, the Dutchmen also
picked-up three points in league play. Senior forward Mike
Bowles netted the game-winning goal and added an assist, while
senior goaltender Justin Mrazek stopped a career-high 46 shots to
earn the win.
The Crimson are back in the national polls at the No. 20 position
after earning four league points last weekend with a 6-1 win over
Yale and a 2-1 stopping of Brown. Sophomore goaltender Kyle
Richter allowed just two goals, both on the power play, on 55 shots
faced in a pair of wins last weekend against rivals Yale and
Brown. He also became the first Harvard goalie to score a
goal, getting credit for the score in the second period of Friday's
win against Yale.
Dartmouth earned a weekend split as seniors Nick Johnson, J.T.
Wyman and Jon Grecu each recorded multiple-point games in topping
Yale, 7-2.
