Weekly Release: League Compiles 8-3 Non-Conference Mark

ALBANY, N.Y.  -- League teams compiled an 8-3 overall record during the first full week of regular-season action, highlighted by Clarkson, Colgate and Union, which each posted a pair of weekend victories. In addition to the League trio, St. Lawrence split with visiting non-conference foes, while Rensselaer opened with a victory Tuesday over Bentley before dropping a pair of games at the Ice Breaker Invitational.

The Golden Knights, ranked No. 13 nationally, improved their record to 2-1-0 with a 2-1 overtime victory over UMass, 2-1 and 2-0 triumph over Providence 2-0 at home.  Senior captain Nick Dodge scored a goal for his 100th career point and set-up Jr. Dan Tuttle just 59 seconds into the extra session to give Clarkson a 2-1 victory over UMass.  The following night, goaltender David Leggio picked up his fourth career shutout registering a 28-save performance against the Friars.

Colgate's opening weekend was also a success.  A balanced attack in which nine different players register at least one point help the Raiders down visiting Sacred Heart 6-2 Friday.  Senior Tyler Burton's career-high four-point effort and freshman Brian Day, who netted the game-winner,  led the Raiders' offense.  Colgate continued its balanced attack the following evening registering a 6-5 victory over RIT in which 12 players recorded at least one point. 

Union opened the 2007-08 season with a weekend sweep over Ferris State.  The Dutchman registered a pair of goals in the second period Friday in the season opener and senior goaltender Justin Mrazek posted 18 saves to record the shuout.  It was the same story Saturday with solid defense and opportunistic scoring led by junior captain Matt Cook's one goal and two assists, as the Dutchmen recorded a 4-1 victory. 

St. Lawrence skated to a 4-1 win over Providence Friday, before falling to UMass 3-1 Saturday.  The No. 12-ranked Saints were led by a solid performance by senior Justin Pesony, who stopped 34 of 35 shots against the Friars.

Rensselaer opened the season with 4-0 victory over Bentley Tuesday as Jordan Alford posted the shutout in goal. The Engineers then participated in the Ice Breaker Invitational at the Xcel Energy Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.  In the first-round match-up the the Engineers faced host Minnesota.  RPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two periods, but could not hold off the Golden Gophers in dropping a 4-3 decision before 14,000 fans.  The following night, the Engineers dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision to No. 2-ranked Boston College, despite getting a 44-save performance from Alford.
