Day, Winchester, Mrazek Earn League Honors
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Colgate senior
captain Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) and
freshman Brian Day (Danvers,
Mass.), and Union senior goaltender Justin Mrazek
(Regina, Sask.) were honored as the season's first player,
rookie and goaltender of the week, respectively, Monday by ECAC
Hockey.
Winchester earns the first Player of the Week award of his career
following a weekend in which he contributed two goals and two
assists in a Raiders' sweep of Sacred Heart and RIT. Winchester
scored the fourth goal and assisted on the fifth in the 6-2 win
versus the Pioneers Friday. Against the Tigers Saturday,
Winchester netted Colgate's first power-play goal of the year
to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead, and assisted on his team's third
goal.
Day scored three goals in his first two collegiate games,
including the game-winner both nights. On Friday, Day gave Colgate
a 3-1 lead against Sacred Heart late in the first period with
his first career goal. The next night versus RIT, he scored
midway through the second period to give the Raiders a 4-2
lead, and netted the winning goal late in the third period on
a 5-on-3 power play. Day led Colgate with six shots on goal versus
the Tigers.
Mrazek earns his second career goaltender of the week award for his
efforts in leading the Dutchmen to a sweep of visiting Ferris
State. Mrazek compiled 43 saves and allowed just one goal in
guiding Union to 2-0 and 4-1 triumphs to open the season. He earned
his fifth career shutout Friday with an 18-save performance, and
followed that outing by stopping 25 shots to complete the weekend
sweep. Surprisingly, Mrazek's previous weekly honor came in October
2006 after he made 76 saves in a season-opening sweep at Ferris
State.
