Governor's Cup and Shootout at Ingalls Highlight
Activity
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The end of October traditionally
showcases some of the finest regular-season tournaments of the
season. This weekend is no exception as ECAC Hockey teams
take to the ice in tournament action highlighted by the second
annual Citizens Bank Governor's Cup and the Shootout at
Ingalls. After previously playing exhibition games and
scrimmages several league teams begin regular-season play this
weekend, including: Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, and
Yale.
Rensselaer will look to defend its title at the Citizens Bank
Governor's Cup in Albany, NY when they take on Capital District
rival Union at 7 p.m on Friday at the Times Union Center. The
3-2 Engineers have featured a balanced attack that has yet to yield
a 5-on-5 goal this season. Union is 2-0 coming off a weekend
sweep of Ferris State where it only allowed one goal in the two
contests. The first game of the tournament will feature No.
15 St. Lawrence taking on Colgate and its high-scoring duo of
senior forwards Tyler Burton and Jesse Winchester who have combined
for 14 points in four non-league games. The Raiders have also
received goal-scoring power from freshman Brian Day and sophomore
Jason Williams, who have netted four and three goals respectively
on the season. The Saints' scoring defense, which has
permitted only 2.75 goals per game, looks to be the solution in
stopping the Raiders' offense. The tournament will conclude
Saturday with the third-place game at 4 p.m. and the championship
game at 7 p.m.
Brown, Princeton, and Yale will begin their regular-season in
non-conference action playing in the Shootout at Ingalls in New
Haven, CT. Host Yale will take on Princeton at 7:30 p.m. on
Friday and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday it will battle Brown led by
preseason all-League member senior defenseman Sean Hurley.
Other match-ups in the Shootout include Coach Roger Grillo's Bears
playing an exhibition game against Ontario Institute of Technology
at 4:30 p.m; and on Saturday the Tigers taking on Ontario IT.
Princeton opened its season with a 5-3 exhibition win over
Trois-Rivieres, with sophomore forward Kevin Kaiser scoring the
Tigers' first and fifth goals in the tune-up
win.
Cornell will play a non-conference game versus RIT in Rochester, NY
at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Sophomore defenseman Brendon Nash of
the Big Red, ranked No. 18 nationally, will play a pivotal role as
for a Cornell team that has been selected to finish fourth in the
conference in both the 2007-08 Pre-season Coaches and Media
polls.
Last Week's Clarkson's junior forward Chris D'Avise, who scored the
game winning overtime goal in a thriller versus St. Lawrence, looks
to once again lead the Golden Knights to a victory when they travel
to Lake Superior State in non-conference action. The No. 8/9
Golden Knights are 3-1 on the season and always showcase a stern
defense are led by senior goaltender David Leggio who has posted a
1.99 GAA in the young season.
Capping-off the weekend action will be Dartmouth who travels to
Hockey East foe Vermont on Sunday in a hockey matinee at 4
p.m. The two teams squared-off last October, with the Big
Green coming out on top with a 3-2 win.
