Callahan Joins Cup Champions
The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed free-agent defenseman Joe Callahan to a one-year contract. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
Callahan, 24, (12/20/82), played in 78 games last season with San Antonio of the American Hockey League (AHL), scoring 1-13=14 points with 65 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-3, 221-pound blueliner set professional career highs in assists and points last season.
A Brockton, Mass. native, Callahan has played in 246 career AHL games, collecting 6-30=36 points with 231 PIM. Before turning pro, he played 94 career games at Yale in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and recorded 11-33=44 points with 96 PIM.
Callahan was originally drafted by Phoenix in the third round (70th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
