Grillo, Appert to Lead U.S. Under-18 Select Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Brown head coach Roger Grillo and Rensselaer head coach Seth Appert will lead the 2007 U.S. Under-18 Select Team it was announced today by USA Hockey. The squad will compete in the 2007 Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka from August 14-18 in Piestany, Slovakia and Hodonin, Czech Republic.
Grillo (North Kingstown, R.I.) will serve as the head coach of the Under-18 Select Team, with Appert (Niskayuna, N.Y.) serving as Grillo's assistant.
Grillo recently completed his 10th year of head coach at Brown. In his time at Brown, Grillo has been a Spencer Penrose Coach of the Year finalist and an ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year runner-up. He also served as the president of the American Hockey Coaches Association for the 2005-06 season. This will be his second stint as a head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. He led Team USA in the 2004 Under-18 Junior World Cup in Breclav and Hodonin, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. Grillo is a USA Hockey Level 5 certified coach.
Appert recently completed his first season as the head coach at Rensselaer. Prior to his time at RPI, Appert spent nine years as an assistant coach at Denver of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In his time at Denver, the team won two NCAA Division I national championships. He is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach.
NOTES: The Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka was called the Junior World Cup until 2005 ... The 2007 Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka will host teams from Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States ... Last August, at the 2006 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka, the U.S. Under-18 Select Team finished in second place with a record of 3-1-0 ... The annual USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp provides top young players with concentrated on- and off-ice training and instruction as well as the opportunity to compete at a national level against other players from their age group.
