Colgate Collects Toys, Cash for Local Needy Families

HAMILTON, NY - The Colgate University men's hockey team collected 169 toys and more than $450 in cash donations at its second annual toy drive last weekend. The Raiders raffled off a team-signed stick and team-signed jersey as part of the drive, which took place at the team's home games against Robert Morris.

The toys and cash will be given to the Interfaith Council Holiday Project, which will wrap and distribute the toys to needy families in Madison County. The cash will be used to purchase additional toys and clothes for the families.

"We were very pleased to host the toy drive again this year," said sophomore Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.), who coordinated the event. "The first two toy drives were a huge success, and hopefully we can build upon that success in future years. By teaming up with the Interfaith Council Holiday Project for the toy drive, we know that all the toys and money raised will undoubtedly help many families have a great holiday season."

"The Interfaith Council appreciates very much the effort that was put into the toy drive this year by the Colgate hockey team, headed by Ethan Cox," said Kim Taranto, the project's shopping coordinator. "We service over 80 families in the surrounding communities, and this will help us go above and beyond what we had hoped to provide for each family."

Cox, a candidate for the 2008 Hockey Humanitarian Award, has spearheaded the Colgate hockey team's charitable efforts since he arrived on campus last season. Under his leadership, the Raiders have raised more than $10,000 in cash and donated items to benefit both local and national charities, including the National MS Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Raiders are in the midst of a four-week break from competition as they prepare for final exams and the holiday season. Colgate returns to the ice after Christmas when they participate in the Badger Showdown, Dec. 28-29, in Madison, Wis.
