Second-Period Outburst Lifts RPI Over Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Engineers scored three times in the second
period, including a power play marker with just one second
remaining, to erase two two-goal deficits and #18 Rensselaer
defeated Princeton, 4-3, in ECAC Hockey action.
With the win RPI improves to 7-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the league.
The Tigers fall to 4-5-0 and 3-4-0.
Princeton took a 1-0 lead at 7:56 of the first period when Lee
Jubinville scored. The Tigers doubled their margin less than two
minutes later when Cam Ritchie found the back of the net at the
9:37 mark. A shorthanded goal by freshman defenseman Jeff Foss
(Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) - the first of his career - at 17:08 got
the Engineers on the board, cutting their deficit to 2-1 after the
first period.
A power play goal by Princeton's Cam MacIntyre 3:53 into the second
period put the homestanding Tigers back ahead by two goals (3-1),
but RPI then scored the next three goals to build a 4-3 lead.
Sophomore defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer (East Setauket, NY/New York
Apple Core) started the flurry when he scored at 6:32 on a wrist
shot with freshman Joel Malchuk earning the only assist on the
play. Sophomore Paul Kerins (Weston, ON/North York Rangers) tied
the game midway through the period when he beat two defenders and
the goalie for his third of the season.
Senior Jonathan Ornelas (Mississauga, ON/Milton IceHawks) put
the Engineers ahead, 4-3, with his power play goal with just one
second left on the clock in the middle frame. Andrei Uryadov (St.
Petersburg, Russia/South Kent) and Andrew Lord (West Vancouver,
BC/Vernon Vipers) earned the assists.
Junior Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core)
earned the win in goal for RPI, stopping 32 shots, including 15 in
the third period. Alan Reynolds made 21 saves on the other end for
Princeton.
