Cornell Earns Draw with No. 11 UMass
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore goaltender Ben Scrivens made a
career-high 45 saves, including 19 in the first period, to post his
first shutout of the season as the Cornell men's hockey team skated
to a scoreless tie against No. 11 Massachusetts on Friday night at
Lynah Rink.
The Big Red (4-4-1 overall) was out-shot on the night, 45-24, but
kept the nationally-ranked Minutemen off the scoreboard with a
combination of the 45 stops from Scrivens and 25 blocked shots from
the Big Red defense. Massachusetts came out firing, collecting the
first nine shots of the game, but the Big Red slowly gained
momentum over the quicker Minutemen.
UMass tallied 19 shots in the first period, 13 in the second and 11
in the third to go along with two in the five-minute overtime, but
could not solve Scrivens. Cornell, on the other hand, built up as
the game went along, recording five shots in the first period,
seven in the second and nine in the third to pair with three in
overtime. Like Scrivens, though, Massachusetts goaltender Paul
Dainton was up to the task as he stopped all 24 shots he faced on
the night.
The game featured several intense hits, including a massive check
by Colin Greening on UMass' Doug Kublin in the corner. Kublin lost
his stick and was momentarily dazed, skating in a few circles
before stopping to pick his stick up along the side boards.
The combination of the speed of the Minutemen and the strength of
the Big Red created an almost playoff-like atmosphere at Lynah
Rink, where the Big Red was playing just its third game of the
season.
Cornell now has a full 28 days to prepare for its annual trip to
the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla. The Big Red will open
the tournament against UMass-Lowell on Dec. 28 in a 4:00 p.m.
contest.
