Colgate, Quinnipiac Settle for Tie
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate junior Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.)
scored 2:06 into the third to tie the score of the men's hockey
team's game against Quinnipiac at 1-1, and that was how things
ended as each team earned a point in their first ECAC Hockey game
of the season on Friday, Nov. 2, at Starr Rink.
Senior Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) forced Quinnipiac to turn over
the puck as the Bobcats were trying to break out of their own end.
He poked the puck loose to Riley on the left side, and Riley
skated in and shot over the left shoulder of QU goalie Peter Vetri.
With the assist, Burton passed current Colgate assistant coach
Andrew Dickson for 26th on the school's all-time scoring list,
giving him 123 points in 123 games.
After a scoreless first period, the Bobcats got on the board 7:53
into the middle stanza. Isak Tranvik sent the puck into the zone
from center ice, and Mike Atkinson picked up just over the blue
line. He skated down the left side, and tucked it inside the post
before Colgate senior goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver,
B.C.) could slide over to make the stop.
Quinnipiac received a prime opportunity to retake the lead when
Colgate freshman Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) was whistled for a
major hitting from behind penalty just 48 seconds after Riley's
goal. However, the Raider penalty kill was up to the task, and the
Bobcats' opportunity was neutralized when David Marshall took a
roughing penalty two minutes into the long power play. QU finished
0-for-4 with the man advantage, while Colgate was 0-for-2.
Dekanich finished the game with 29 saves, including three in the
overtime, as his Raiders edge Quinnipiac in shots, 31-30. Vetri
posted 30 stops, including 13 in the first period. Colgate edged
Quinnipiac in the faceoff circle, 28-27.
Colgate is back on the ice on Saturday, Nov. 3, when it hosts
Princeton at 3:00 p.m.
