Princeton Completes Weekend Sweep
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Princeton men's hockey team used a pair of
first period goals to jump to an early lead and defeat Colgate 2-0
on Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink. Sophomore Zane Kalemba made 25
saves for his first collegiate shutout.
Princeton weathered some strong Colgate pressure in the early
minutes and countered at 8:48 when sophomore Mark Magnowski scored
his first goal of the season. Freshman Taylor Fedun began the play
in his own end, skated into the Colgate zone and fired a shot that
was blocked behind the Colgate goal. The puck rattled around and
came to Magnowski in front who quickly put it on net and squeezed
it through Colgate goaltender Mark Dekanich.
Princeton made its lead 2-0 with a power-play goal at 18:08 of the
first period as Princeton's potent combination of juniors Lee
Jubinville and Brett Wilson and sophomore Cam MacIntyre connected
again. Fedun got the puck low in the Colgate end where he left it
for Wilson. Wilson sent it to MacIntyre who set up Jubinville
behind the goal line. Jubinville waited there all along until
MacIntyre moved to the net and put a perfect pass on his tape that
MacIntyre directed through the legs of Dekanich for his fifth goal
of the season.
That was all the scoring, but there was exciting action throughout
both the second and third periods. Colgate came close to getting on
the board a few times when shots by Tyler Burton and Wade Poplawski
rang off the cross bar, but Colgate was unable to put a puck in the
net and Princeton won the game by a final score 2-0.
Sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba made 25 saves to record the first
collegiate shutout of his career. Dekanich made 19 saves in a
losing effort.
Princeton now improves to 3-0 overall this season and 2-0 in league
play. The Tigers' 3-0 start is the best since a 3-0 beginning to
the 1979-80 season. Princeton's successive wins over Cornell and
Colgate marked the team's first league road sweep in 36 tries.
Princeton last swept a road league weekend on Feb. 10-11, 2000 at
Rensselaer and Union.
Princeton returns to action next Friday night when St. Lawrence
visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
