
Princeton Advances to Semis With Shutout of Yale
PRINCETON, NJ -- The 16th-ranked Princeton
men's hockey team advanced to the ECAC Hockey Semifinals for the
first time in nine seasons with a quarterfinal-series clinching 4-0
shutout of Yale on Sunday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Freshman Matt
Arhontas had a goal and an assist in the win and sophomore Zane
Kalemba made 31 saves for the shutout.
For the third night in a row Princeton got off to a fast start and
led 2-0 in the opening period. The Tigers got on the scoreboard at
3:27 with a power-play goal. Junior Brett
Wilson won the offensive zone face-off back to freshman Taylor
Fedun along the blueline. Fedun took a shot that was blocked but
the rebound caromed right to Wilson at the side of the net, and he
fired it into the open net for his 14th goal of the season.
Princeton made the score 2-0 at 14:24 of the period when sophomore
Cam
MacIntyre scored his 12th goal of the season and his third tally of
the series on a great 2-on-1 feed from sophomore Mark
Magnowski, who held the puck until the lasts econd before feeding a
centering pass for MacIntyre who redirected it by Yale netminder
Billy Blase.
Princeton added to its lead when junior Brandan
Kushniruk scored with 3:34 left in the second period. Sophomore Kevin
Kaiser worked the puck off the boards to Kushniruk in front and he
quickly one-timed the pass for his third goal of the season. Senior
Kyle
Hagel added an assist on the goal.
The Tigers capped the scoring in the third period when freshman Matt
Arhontas scored shorthanded on a breakaway at 5:41. Fedun and
senior Mike
Moore assisted on the goal as Moore knocked the puck to Arhontas
who went in on Blase on a breakaway and scored high to the glove
side for his eighth goal of the season and his third goal of the
series. He also has goals in his last four games played.
Kalemba had another brilliant night in goal, making 31 saves for
his second shutout of the series and his fourth of the year. Blase
made 28 saves in the loss.
The win was Princeton's 19th of the season and moved the Tigers to
19-13. Yale ended its season at 16-14-4.
The Tigers shutout Yale in the first and third games of the series
to take the series. Princeton will advance to the semifinals next
Friday where the Tigers will meet eighth-seeded Colgate in the
day's first game at 4 p.m. Harvard and Cornell will play in the
