Sawada, Big Red Extend Season

Boxscore

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Raymond Sawada scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Cornell men's hockey team advanced to the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals with a 6-0 win over Dartmouth on Sunday night at Lynah Rink. Cornell wins the best-of-three series, two games to one, and will face Union in another best-of-three series next weekend in Schenectady, N.Y.

Sawada, who entered the weekend with four goals on the season, scored his fourth and fifth goals of the weekend in Sunday's win over Dartmouth. The senior scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with exactly one minute remaining in the first period. Sophomore goalie Ben Scrivens picked up 32 saves in his second shutout victory over Dartmouth in the last two weeks while also scoring his first career point on Sawada's second goal of the night.

In the second period, Sawada assisted on Brendon Nash's first goal of the season. Sawada hit Michael Kennedy with a pass, and the junior fired a shot at Dartmouth goalie Mike Devine that was stopped, but the rebound came off to the weak side where Nash cleaned up the rebound. Four and a half minutes later, the Big Red took a 3-0 lead on Blake Gallagher's goal, taking a feed from Evan Barlow who had forced a turnover just inside the Dartmouth blue line.

Sawada scored his fifth goal of the weekend at the 12:18 mark of the second period, scoring in transition on a delayed penalty on Dartmouth. Scrivens stopped the puck behind the Cornell goal and classmate Justin Krueger whipped the puck along the boards, where it came to Sawada just past the red line. Sawada then skated in on Devine, faking out the senior goaltender before sliding the puck into the back of the goal.

In the third period, Mike Devin and Patrick Kennedy added goals for the Big Red, with Devin's a blast from the center point after taking a pass from Colin Greening. Kennedy capped off the scoring with a goal off a feed from Riley Nash and Colin Greening with 6:40 to play in the contest.

Cornell held the Big Green power play, which had come into the game seventh in the country in power play efficiency, scoreless in six man-advantage chances. The Big Red also killed off an extended 5-on-3 for 1:26 in the first period, keeping Dartmouth off the scoreboard. Cornell, meanwhile, converted on one of its two chances on the power play for the evening.

The Big Red will now face Union in a best-of-three quarterfinal series next weekend in Schenectady, N.Y. Game one of the series is set for Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at Messa Rink at Achilles Center.
