Big Green Fall to Visiting Crimson
BoxscoreHANOVER, N.H. -- In an ECAC Hockey matchup it was Harvard that
came away with valuable league points as the Crimson notched two
goals in the second to defeat the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 3-1
on Saturday in Thompson Arena. After a scoreless first period
Harvard notched two goals less than three minutes apart to take the
lead.
Doug Rogers and Jon Pelle connected on goals at 13:23 and 16:15 of
the second period to spot the Crimson a two-goal lead. Dartmouth's
Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) got one back for the home team with
:54 seconds to go in the frame. Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.)
got the puck at center ice as both teams were in transition. He
passed quickly up to Stephens along the right side boards as the
freshman rocketed the puck over netminder Kyle Richter's
shoulder.
Harvard put the game away on a Pelle strike at 3:07 in the final
stanza. Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) and Joe Gaudet (Etna,
N.H.) had chances to get the Big Green on the board in the third as
both had shots on net on the same power play but Richter was up to
the challenge as he finished the game with 18 saves.
In the opening frame neither team seemed to have much momentum as
the game was a very start and stop contest early on. The Crimson
had a chance to go up on a one-on-one but goalie Mike Devine
(Orchard Park, N.Y.) looked like the netminder that stopped 84
shots last week as he came up big. The two teams skated into the
first break scoreless as Harvard had seven shots to Dartmouth's
three.
The second period had Dartmouth showing a little more life until
the Crimson's first goal shifted the momentum to the visitors.
Harvard outshot Dartmouth 30-19 in the game as the Big Green has
now been outshot in its last 10 contests.
With the loss Dartmouth falls to 8-9-1 overall, 3-8-1 in the ECAC.
Harvard improves to 7-9-3, 6-6-2 in the league as the victory is
Harvard's first since defeating the Big Green on Dec. 1.
