Greening's Pair Gives Big Red Tie with Bulldogs

Boxscore

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Colin Greening scored a pair of goals in the second period as the Cornell men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Yale on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. Defenseman Brendon Nash picked up a pair of assists for the Big Red, while goaltender Ben Scrivens made 26 saves in picking up his third tie of the year.

Cornell went 1-for-5 on the power play on the night against Yale, which had entered Saturday's game with the nation's top penalty killing unit at 91.1 percent. The Big Red also killed off both of the two power play opportunities awarded to the Bulldogs, stretching its streak to 24 consecutive penalties without allowing a power play goal.

Following a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs drew first blood at the 5:17 mark of the second period. Blair Yaworski threw the puck at the Cornell goal, where it appeared to bounce off the elbow of teammate Matt Nelson and into the far side of the goal. The Big Red took just three minutes to respond when Greening fired a one-timer after taking a pass across the ice from Evan Barlow. Six minutes later, it was Greening again, this time tipping home a point shot from Brendon Nash on the power play to put the Big Red ahead by one.

Yale evened the score with just under two minutes to play in the second period, as Matthew Thomey scored the tying goal after taking a pass from Denny Kearney.

The third period saw the two teams combine for just 11 shots, with six of those belonging to the Big Red. In the five-minute overtime session, Yale peppered Scrivens with four shots, but could not sneak one past the sophomore netminder as the game ended knotted at two.

The Big Red returns to action on Friday, closing out its five-game home stand with a contest against travel partner Yale. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink and can be seen in Central New York on Time Warner Sports. The two teams will then meet again on Saturday in a 7 p.m. contest in Hamilton, N.Y., also to be televised on Time Warner Sports.
