Quinnipiac Continues to Roll
NEW HAVEN, CT -- Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) stopped 16 shots in goal as he recorded his eighth career shutout, passing Jamie Holden to become the all-time leader at Quinnipiac. With a 3-0 win over Yale, Quinnipiac improves to 13-5-3 overall and 6-3-3 in ECAC Hockey while Yale drops to 7-6-3 overall and 4-4-3 in ECAC Hockey play.
"I thought we played pretty well," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "In the first period, we played a little sluggish, I wasn't really happy with our effort. The second and third periods were phenomenal."
The Bobcats pushed their unbeaten streak, the longest current streak in Division I hockey, to nine games. The streak ties Quinnipiac's longest unbeaten streak in the school's Division I history. It also breaks Quinnipiac's longest ECAC Hockey mark, eight, which it also accomplished in 2005-06.
Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) had a goal and one assist for his fourth consecutive multi-point game.
"It's been a great run," Pecknold said. "We've had a lot of kids contributing. We've had some injuries and our guys have played through that. It's a credit to this team."
Both teams played to a 0-0 tie through the first period as both goalies were on full display. Fisher turned back six Bulldog shots-on-goal while his counterpart, Yale's Alec Richards, had eight saves in the first period.
"I thought Bud was great," Pecknold said. "He made a great save on a 1-on-1 with Sean Backman. He only practiced once this week, and I was a little worried about him playing rusty, but he really had a great game."
David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) put the Bobcats on the board with his eighth goal of the season at 5:10 into the second period. Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) hit Marshall with the outlet pass, who touch passed it over to Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.). Wong then gave it back to Marshall who was in double coverage. Marshall handled the puck between his own legs and then slipped it past Richards to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. It was Marshall's seventh goal in five games all-time against Yale.
In the third, Wong put the Bobcats up 2-0 when Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) dumped the puck into the left corner behind the Yale goal. Wong then stole the puck from the Bulldogs' defense, spun and buried his sixth goal of the season.
Lampe scored his seventh goal of the year in the closing minutes of the third period. Beaudoin chipped the puck up the ice to Lampe on the breakaway who scored on an empty Bulldog net.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross in a non-conference match-up set for 4 p.m.
