Princeton Comes From Behind to Top Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- For the third time in four games, the
Princeton men's hockey team rallied from behind, this time
defeating Yale 4-3 on Friday night at Ingalls Rink. Princeton
scored three goals in the first 5:19 of the third period to go
ahead for good in the game. Sophomores Lee Jubinville and Mark
Magnowski, along with freshman Mike Kramer had a goal and assist in
the win.
Yale controlled play from the onset, but struggled finding the back
of the net. Yale outshot Princeton 15-5 in the opening stanza, but
neither team scored in that period. Princeton broke the scoreless
tie with the game's first goal at10:25 of the second period when
Bartlett scored his fourth of the season. The power-play goal came
as senior Mike Moore carried the puck into the Yale zone and after
stepping around a Bulldog defender fed Bartlett at the opposite
post for the goal.
Yale countered with the game's next two goals to take a 2-1 lead to
the second intermission. Mike Matczak scored the first through a
screen off a face off, while Denny Kearney got the second when he
found the rebound of a Matczak shot on the power play.
Princeton bounced back though in the third period with three quick
goals to regain the lead. First, Kramer notched his third of the
season when he skated into the Yale zone and took a shot from the
top of the circle that handcuffed Yale netminder Billy Blaise and
bounced over his catching glove. Sophomore Jody Pederson and
Jubinville got helpers on the goal, which came 57 seconds into the
period.
Princeton took the lead less than a minute later when Jubinville
found the back of the net off a redirect of a pass from junior
Brett Wilson. The goal was Jubinville's sixth of the year and
Kramer notched an assist on it.
Princeton added some insurance, which proved valuable at 5:19 of
the period when sophomore Mark Magnowski scored his fourth of the
season. Bartlett took the initial shot off the rush and the puck
laid loose in the crease, where Magnowski shoved it in to give
Princeton a 4-2 lead. Sophomore Cam MacIntyre assisted on the
goal.
Yale countered to make the score 4-3 when Sean Backman scored at
6:08, but Yale would get no closer and Princeton picked up the 4-3
win.
Princeton sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba made 30saves for the
win, while Blaise made 13 in a losing effort. Princeton moved to
9-8 overall and 7-4 in ECAC Hockey. The Tigers visit Brown tomorrow
at 7 p.m.
