Four-Goal First Period Sinks Bears
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Sixteenth-ranked Quinnipiac (12-5-3, 5-3-3)
scored 5:11 into the contest and never looked back to cruise to a
6-3 victory over the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-10-4, 1-5-3) on
Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Things didn't start well for the Bears, who found themselves down,
1-0, at the 5:11 mark when Dan Travis scored off a face-off win to
sophomore Dan Rosen's (Syosset, NY) left. Just 2:31 later Zach
Hansen gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead when his wrist shot from the
right point beat Rosen to the far corner.
Quinnipiac would add two more before the end of the period, scoring
two in a span of 3:06 to earn a 4-0 lead at 16:08.
The Bears had a better second period, outshooting the Bobcats by a
slim, 8-7, margin, but Jean-Marc Beaudoin increased Quinnipiac's
lead to 5-0 at 14:38 when he batted the puck out of the air, over
Rosen and into the back of the net.
Brown got on the board 2:04 into the third period when sophomore
Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) knocked in the rebound of a
shot from classmate Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC). Sophomore
Scott Van der Linden (Antigonish, NS) also picked up an assist on
the goal for his first point of the season.
However, just 42 seconds later, the Bobcats regained the five-goal
lead when Chris Myers was left all alone in the slot and had just
Rosen to beat after collecting the puck from Mark Agnew.
Brown's special teams scored the final two goals of the game to
account for the 6-3 final. Freshman David Brownschidle
(Lawrenceville, NJ) scored a short-handed breakaway at 9:21 for his
second goal of the year and then sophomore Sean McMonalgle
(Oakville, ONT) notched a power-play goal with 28 seconds remaining
off assists from senior Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) and Rosen.
Rosen finished with 26 saves, while Pat McGann made 18 stops for
the Bobcats. Now winless in their last ten games (0-8-2), the Bears
continue their four-game home stand, the longest stretch of home
games this season, tomorrow night when they host Princeton at 7:00
p.m.
