Bobcats Rally to Beat Dartmouth
Hamden, CT -- Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) scored the
final two goals in a 5-3 win over Dartmouth in an ECAC Hockey
match-up at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With
the win, Quinnipiac extends their unbeaten streak to seven games as
they improve to 11-5-3 overall with a 4-3-3 ECAC mark. Dartmouth
drops to 5-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in ECAC play.
"I'm very happy to get two points today," head coach Rand Pecknold
said. "I'm happy that we battled back after being down 2-1 and then
3-2. We should have played better in the first period, but overall
I'm happy with the result."
Dan Henningson (Edmonton, Alb.) had three assists in the game, the
first time a Quinnipiac player recorded three assists in a game
since Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) had a playmaker against Colgate
on February 17. Wong added a goal and two assists in the Bobcats'
win over the Big Green.
"We were streaky all game," Henningson said. "But we played with a
lot of confidence, which is what you need when you're playing
behind. We have a lot of guys playing hard out there."
Pat McGann (Evergreen Park, Ill.) started in his first collegiate
game for the Bobcats. The freshman goalie had 20 saves for
Quinnipiac, including a kick save with six minutes to play on a
shot from Dartmouth's Scott Fleming, that would have tied the
game.
"There's no question that was the save of the game," Pecknold said.
"Pat played a great game tonight and I'm happy he got he first
win."
Dartmouth scored twice early with both goals coming a minute apart.
Connor Shields scored his fourth goal of the season on a pass from
Will Boardman at the 14:05 mark. At 14:57, Rob Pritchard scored on
assists from Evan Stephens and Nick Johnson.
Quinnipiac cut the Dartmouth lead in half at the 16:49 marker when
David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) found Dan Henningson (Edmonton,
Alb.) alone just above the left face-off circle. Henningson's shot
was deflected past Dartmouth's Mike Devine by Ben Nelson (Spokane,
Wash.) for Nelson's 10th goal of the year.
The Bobcats tied the game a little over two minutes into the second
period when Henningson passed to Jamie Bates (Toronto, Ont.) from
the point to behind the net. Bates found Eric Lampe (Madison,
Wisc.) cutting in from the right flank and dropped the pass to the
sophomore forward. Lampe moved across the crease and beat Devine
with a backhanded shot for his sixth goal of the season to tie the
game at 2-2.
Dartmouth took a 3-2 lead just under four minutes into the third
period when John Gibson's shot was stopped but the rebound was put
home by Adam Estoclet. The goal was Estoclet's second of the
season.
Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) tied the game with a power play goal
at the 12:32 mark. Henningson's shot attempt was rebounded by
Beaudoin in front of the Dartmouth goal, who then found Wong for
the goal. The goal was Wong's fourth of the season while Beaudoin
picked up his sixth assist. Henningson also picked up his third
assist of the game and 11th of the season.
Beaudoin scored the game-winner with 10:45 remaining in the game.
Wong took a hit at center ice and flipped the puck to the far side,
finding Dan Travis (Wilton, N.H.). Travis knocked the puck down out
of mid-air and found Beaudoin in front of the net for the goal.
"That was a highlight reel play," Beaudoin said. "That starts with
Wong making a great play at center ice, then Travis knocking the
puck down out of mid-air. I'm was just lucky to be able to finish
that play."
Beaudoin scored again with 31 seconds remaining on an empty net on
a pass from Wong.
Quinnipiac returns to play on Friday, Jan. 11 when they travel to
Providence, R.I. to take on Brown University in an ECAC Hockey tilt
set for 7 p.m. The Bobcats then play in-state rival Yale University
on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
