Dartmouth Loses Big To Cornell

Box Score

ITHACA, NY --  The Dartmouth men's hockey team ran into a wall in Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens as the Big Red defeated the Big Green, 6-0 on Friday in Lynah Rink.

The home struck first with a power play strike from Colin Greening at 11:55 in the opening period. The Big Green had given Cornell its second power play chance of the frame when Greening slipped it past netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.).

Scott Fleming (Edina, Minn.) had a chance to get his team on the board on its own extra-man advantage but was unable to get the puck past Scrivens. Three straight shots by Dartmouth in the final minutes of the stanza kept Scrivens on his toes but the Big Green was unable to capitalize on its 11 shots.

Cornell put another one on the board with a second power play goal at 7:11 of the second. Michael Kennedy shot from behind the left side of the net to Justin Krueger who was waiting on the right side circle. Krueger blasted the one-timer over Devine's shoulder.

A third power play goal by Riley Nash and the home team less than two minutes later gave Cornell an almost insurmountable 3-0 lead. Greening put the capper on the period with his second goal at 2:47. The sophomore took the puck away from a Dartmouth skater coming in alone on Devine lifting it behind the senior netminder. That goal chased Devine from the net as sophomore Joe Grossman (Foxboro, Mass.) came on in relief.

Cornell got one past Grossman at 14:11 in the third as Raymond Sawada went glove-side on the sophomore. Less than a minute later Greening recorded his third as the hats went flying for the sophomore as the Big Red went up, 6-0.

Will Boardman (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) were both able to get shots on Scrivens but the goalie was up to the task.

Grossman held off a swarming Cornell offense for the rest of the period as he finished with seven saves. Devine had 15 while Scrivens made 31 as the Big Green outshot the Big Red, 31-27.

Dartmouth is back on the road tomorrow with a 4:00 pm matchup against Colgate at Starr Rink.
