Quinnipiac's Rally Falls Short

Boxscore

HAMDEN, Conn. -- Quinnipiac battled back from a two-goal deficit to force overtime, but Cornell's Michael Kennedy scored the game-winning goal with 19.4 seconds remaining in the extra session as the Big Red defeated the Bobcats, 3-2, Friday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 17-10-4 (9-6-4 ECAC Hockey) while the Big Red improves to 13-10-3 (11-7-1 ECAC).

David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) scored the game-tying goal late in regulation and added an assist on the night. Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) also scored for the Bobcats. Fisher made 21 saves in net.

Ben Scrivens had 33 saves to earn the win for Cornell.

Quinnipiac trailed by one with less than two minutes left in regulation when head coach Rand Pecknold pulled Fisher in favor of an extra skater with 1:51 remaining. The Bobcats had a pair of shots stopped by Scrivens before the Big Red turned the puck over at the left face-off dot in their own zone. Marshall then took a shot from the left side that deflected off the glove of Scrivens and inside the right post for the equalizer with 1:13 remaining. Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alberta) and Brandon Wong (Victoria, British Columbia) earned assists on the goal.

The Big Red got on the board first with a power play goal at the 12:31 mark of the first period. Cornell worked the puck around the perimeter before Mike Devin fired a shot from the point that was tipped in front by Raymond Sawada past Fisher. Devin and Kennedy were credited with assists.

Cornell struck again at the 3:03 mark of the second, when Fisher couldn't control the rebound of a Gallagher shot. Jared Seminoff collected the puck and passed it off to a wide open Patrick Kennedy at the left post for the easy score. Seminoff and Gallagher earned assists.

Quinnipiac cut the deficit in half, 2-1, just over three minutes later. Andrew Meyer (St. Louis, Mo.) passed out of the Bobcat defensive zone to Marshall on the right wing just in front of the blue line. Marshall hesitated as the defender over-pursued and then found Atkinson at the left post. Atkinson redirected the puck past Scrivens from his position on the left side. Marshall and Meyer claimed the assists.

Devin had a golden opportunity to give the Big Red an insurance goal on an odd-man rush with just under six minutes left in the third period. He beat Fisher underneath the goaltender's right arm, but the shot hit the left post and trickled just inches in front, parallel to the goal line, before going wide.

Marshall's game-tying goal came with 1:12 left in the third period when Quinnipiac pulled Fisher in favor of the extra man. Marshall was assisted on the play by Wong and Beaudoin. Wong's assist was his team-leading 22nd of the season.

In overtime, Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) stopped a pair of shots by Blake Gallagher and Brendon Nash before Kennedy took the second rebound at the right post and deposited the game-winner.

The Bobcats return to action Sunday, when they play host to Colgate in the final regular season home game of the year. Quinnipiac will honor its seniors prior to the 12:30 start.
