Princeton Earns Three Points in ECACHL Play

League teams successful in non-conference games

ALBANY, N.Y. -- There were just four ECAC Hockey League games on the recent weekend schedule, and Princeton came out on top with a win and a tie in two of those games. Harvard was also a winner, claiming two points with a win, while Dartmouth earned two points, and is now tied for first place, after tying twice over the weekend. Non-league games were in the majority over the weekend for ECACHL teams, and they were met with success, earning nine victories. Two of those games counted toward the Commissioners' Cup standings, with Brown and Yale picking up three points.

In league games over the weekend, the Tigers started things off with a 3-3 tie vs. Dartmouth on Friday and then downed the Crimson 4-2 on Saturday. Harvard earned its weekend victory over Quinnipiac, while the Big Green earned a point with a 3-3 tie vs. the Bobcats on Saturday.

The Princeton defense did a great job holding off the Big Green on Friday, allowing just 19 shots on goal. Freshman goalie Zane Kalemba stopped 16 of those shots to earn the tie and then went on to make 32 saves in the win vs. Harvard. Darroll Powe helped provide offense for the Tigers, scoring a goal in each game, including the winner vs. the Crimson. Max Cousins helped the Orange and Black claw its way through the game vs. Dartmouth, netting the tying goal at 9:16 in the third.

Dartmouth's T.J. Galiardi earned Rookie of the Week honors after helping his Big Green squad in its two ties. The freshman had had his first collegiate multiple-point games with two assists in each game, and he was +4 on the weekend. Nick Johnson scored the tying goal on Saturday vs. Quinnipiac, as Dartmouth came from behind to earn the tie. Nine different players had one point each (a total of three goals and six assists) for the Bobcats in that game.

The Crimson earned its two points on Friday with its win over Quinnipiac. The Bobcats started off strong, scoring twice to open the game, but Harvard came back to win it with four straight goals. Alex Biega scored the winning goal late in the third and Jimmy Fraser sealed the game with an empty-netter with just 10 seconds left on the clock.

The Crimson had started off the week last Tuesday and fell to Boston University 2-1.

In other non-league games, Brown, Union and Clarkson all swept their opponents.

Brown's first win was a 4-2 victory over American International, which was also a Commissioners' Cup game. The Bears went on to reclaim the Mayor's Cup on Sunday with a 2-1 win over cross-town rival Providence on Sunday. Dan Rosen was outstanding in goal for Brown vs. the Friars. He made 35 saves and the only goal he let up was a 5-on-3 tally in the second period.

Union claimed victories over Army and No. 14 UMass. T.J. Fox and Jeff Christiansen combined for seven points in the two wins with four goals and three assists. Fox also won 26 faceoffs over the weekend. Saturday's win over UMass marked the first win for the Dutchmen over a ranked opponent since January.

Rensselaer's Andrei Uryadov shared Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals and two assists for the Engineers in its own Rensselaer/Bank of America Holiday Tournament. The sophomore forward had a hat trick on Saturday and assisted on the game-tying goal.

Colgate also participated in the RPI tourney and advanced to the championship round after earning a 4-2 win over Ohio State. Marc Fulton led the team to victory with a goal and an assist in that game. The Raiders fell the next night to Niagara, with Fulton scoring the team's lone goal.

Yale earned a 3-3 tie vs. Mercyhurst last Tuesday for a point in the Commissioners' Cup standings and then fell in overtime to Boston University, 2-1, on Saturday. Mark Arcobello was the guiding force in the tie, as the frosh had a hand in three of the Bulldogs' four goals, with two tallies and a helper.

The final non-league games of the weekend had Cornell playing host to Wayne State. The Big Red lost by one Saturday, but came back to earn a 2-0 win vs. the Warriors Sunday.
