Colgate Takes Pre-Semester Break Lead in the Standings

Yale Sweeps League Games

ALBANY, N.Y. -- After sweeping league games over the weekend, the Colgate Raiders moved up three spots to take over the No. 1 position in the latest ECAC Hockey League standings. Yale also had two big victories over the weekend, winning its first back-to-back league games since January 2004. Cornell also swept its league competition over the weekend.

A handful of non-league games also took place, with Union winning two vs. RIT; St. Lawrence beat UMass-Lowell before falling to New Hampshire; Rensselaer lost to Sacred Heard and Brown fell to Providence in the 20th annual Mayor's Cup.

The Player of the Week, Tyler Burton, helped lead Colgate in its two weekend victories. The Raiders downed Princeton and Quinnipiac by one goal each, giving them 13 points on the year. Burton started off the weekend with a goal against the Bobcats and then had a hand in all three goals vs. the Tigers, including the game winner. Sophomore Jesse Winchester and senior Kyle Wilson were also key factors in the weekend sweep, as the two combined for six points on three goals and three assists.

Yale's two wins - its first league victories of the year - also brought individual honors to two Bulldogs, as freshmen Alec Richards and Michael Karwoski were named Goaltender and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Richards made 31 saves in the 5-2 win over Brown and then stopped 37 against then No. 14 Harvard in a 4-3 win. Karwoski made sure his two shots on goal counted over the weekend, as both were goals. He also had an assist for a league-rookie-best three points on the weekend.

Cornell helped both its league standing and national ranking by defeating both Princeton and Quinnipiac on Friday and Saturday. The Big Red is now tied for fourth in the ECACHL standings and went from No. 11 to No. 9 in the latest USCHO.com/CSTV poll. All-American goaltender David McKee moved into second place on Cornell's career victory list with the two Ws, having passed Brian Cropper (50), with his 50th and 51st career victories. He trails only Ken Dryden, who had a career record of 76-4-1 from 1966-69. Junior Mark McCutcheon was the star against the Bobcats, as he netted the winner with just 23 seconds to play.

Union's Kris Mayotte is also picking up wins, as the senior netminder earned two for the Dutchmen over RIT. His 2-0 shutout on Saturday was the eighth blanking of his career. Senior Scott Seney and Freshman T.J. Fox also contributed, as the duo combined for five points on a goal and four assists.

St. Lawrence split its weekend home series with Hockey East teams UMass.-Lowell and the University of New Hampshire, coming from two down to beat UML 4-2 on Friday, but seeing the tables turned on Saturday as UNH came from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-3. Senior forward T.J. Trevelyan is starting to heat it up for the Saints, as he had two points each night - two goals vs. the River Hawks and a goal and an assist vs. the Wildcats. His first multi-goal night of the season came in the win over Lowell, and he now has a four-game scoring streak.

There are three mid-week games on the upcoming slate, with Harvard playing in two of them. The Crimson starts off with a home game vs. Quinnipiac on Tuesday, a contest that will be televised on NESN. The Crimson then travels to New Hampshire on Thursday for a non-league game. Brown has the other weeknight game, traveling to Portland for a Wednesday night game vs. the Maine Black Bears.

The weekend is full of non-league action. Princeton will take on Alabama-Huntsville in two games at Baker Rink, while Dartmouth and Rensselaer are also at home for Saturday night games vs. Boston University and RIT, respectively. Clarkson and St. Lawrence are heading out to Ohio to take on Bowling Green and Miami on Friday and Saturday, while Union is also in the Buckeye State for games vs. Ohio State on Saturday and Sunday. Dartmouth closes out the weekend with a single contest at UMass-Lowell on Sunday.

Colgate, Cornell and Yale are all idle this week.
