Vermont Claims Lone ECACHL Game of the Week; SLU Sweeps Non-Conference Foe
Quiet Week Ahead for League Schools
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Only four games were played over the weekend by ECAC Hockey League teams. In the lone league contest, Vermont claimed a 5-1 victory over Dartmouth and now sits in second place. St. Lawrence played two games and swept its non-conference opponent to earn a .500 record at the holiday break. Colgate also played over the weekend and won its exhibition contest.
In the Catamounts' game at Dartmouth, rookie Joe Fallon recorded 29 saves and his teammates scored three goals against the top penalty-killing team in the nation to move its record the win. Junior blue liner Jaime Sifers scored Vermont¹s first goal on the power play -- his second goal of the season -- to help lead his team.
St. Lawrence swept Lake Superior State to give the Saints a 6-5-1 record against non-conference opponents, its best since the 1999-2000 Frozen Four team went 6-4-1 outside the league and the fourth winning record in non-league competition since the 1992-93 season. The sweep also gave them the most wins and the best record for the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule since 1999-2000. The Saints are 9-9-1 with the 1999-2000 team going 9-4-1 prior to Christmas break. Junior T.J. Trevelyan recorded his first collegiate hat trick in Sunday's game. Trevelyan had a hand in all four Saint goals, assisting on Mike Madill's game winner.
Colgate's victory was a 7-1 decision over the University of Ottawa. Freshman goaltender Justin Kowalkoski saw his first action of the season and stopped all 10 shots he faced. The Raiders scored five first period goals in the win and of the seven total goals that were scored, six different players accounted for the markers. Overall, 11 different players entered the scoring column in the game.
There are just two games on tap this week, with Harvard participating in Minnesota's Dodge Holiday Classic Dec. 22-23. The Crimson will face Northern Michigan in the first game and either Merrimack or Minnesota the next day. The Crimson are on a hot streak right now, having won nine of its last 10 games, including its last five.
